- Elaborate Centennial Exhibition commemorative print depicting an arched monument containing central views of the "Philadelphia Public Buildings," Independence Hall (1776) and the new City Hall (1876), surrounded by vignettes; allegorical, patriotic, and historical figures; state seals; and references to prominent historical, national and local personages. The public building views include pedestrian and street traffic, the name of City Hall architect John McArthur Jr., and the motto "A Free Nation's Progress." City Hall image also contains misrepresentative views of other municipal- style buildings in the background. Arch comprised of the seals of the original 13 states bordered by abutments containing angels trumpeting "Liberty" and "Independence." Above the arch figures of Liberty, American eagles, Christopher Columbus, William Penn, George Washington, Ulysses S. Grant, and Abraham Lincoln adorn a panel representing a time line of the nation's history. Flanking the central views are columns labeled with the names of the signers of the Declaration of Independence; the states; the U.S. Presidents and Vice-Presidents; prominent citizens, including Alexander Hamilton, William Wirt, Thomas Sullly and Thomas U. Shows commission supply wagons arriving and depositing crates of goods at a campsite; soldiers assisting other soldiers in walking, receiving refreshments, and being transported by a gurney; and an unloaded crate of bottles of beverages, oranges, tins, and bandages. Several men skate, boys sled, dogs chase each other, and children frolic, including a pair retrieving a hat from a broken patch of ice. Others peddle refreshments from a table and flee from broken ice as ruffians engage in a fist fight. - View looking toward the water works originally built between 1812 and 1822 after the designs of Philadelphia engineer Frederick Graff. In the foreground, elegantly dressed women and men, sit, and stand on the veranda admiring the vista as street and pedestrian traffic approaches and departs from the covered Upper Ferry Bridge. Traffic includes horse-drawn carriages, a man on horseback, and a woman walking and holding a parasol. Canal barges travel under the bridge and in the canal lock across from the water works. The water works include the engine house, mill house, and pavilions on the mound dam and on reservoir hill. A water fountain and trees complete the view. Also shows businesses and residences behind the water works in the background. In July 1836, the "George Washington" hauled a load of 19,200 pounds at 15 miles per hour up the Philadelphia and Columbia Railroad's inclined Belmont Plane. It was the first locomotive to ascend a hill on its own power. In 1837, the Philadelphia, Wilmington & Baltimore Railway assumed ownership of the machine. - Circular containing patriotic vignettes above paragraphs of advertising text in addition to bank note specimens for the lithographic studio that began operating at 409 Chestnut in 1858. Central vignette shows the figure of Liberty, one breast exposed, holding a shield and a liberty staff beside a fache and eagle. Surrounding vignettes show sailing vessels, the figure of Justice surrounded by symbols of patriotism and trade, and an allegorical scene with three women posed around an anchor with one, seated, and clinging to the legs of another who stands in a forceful stance. Specimens include female figures and the Traubel imprint. Figures depicted as a romanticized peasant woman, the figure of Justice, and a Native American princess, possibly Columbia. Businesses represented include Freed, Ward, & Freed, Commission Merchants, No. 811 Market Street and Bank of the Northern Liberties. - Series of tradecards advertising the lithographic firm established as Craig, Butt & Finley in 1869 and renamed Craig, Finley & Co. in 1872. Seven of the tradecards depict quaint scenes of children at play and work in addition to one containing a montage of vignette views of buildings at the Centennial Exhibition of 1876. Scenes include a boy presenting flowers to a girl, children witnessing breaking and broken wares, children chasing a rabbit, a shepherd boy with a lamb, and girls performing the wash. All the boys are attired in knickers and most wear hats. Most of the girls are attired in peasant-like dresses. Barrels, visible through the open central entry, are stacked within the space on the first floor. Architectural ornamentations and etched, arched windows adorn the upper story facade. A man, possibly proprietor Gallagher, stands near one of two other doorways to the establishment across from a laborer prying on one of several barrels lined on the sidewalk. In the street, a boy attends to one of two horses drawing a cart loaded with more barrels. Also shows partial views of adjacent buildings. Gallagher immigrated to the United States in 1856 and established a wholesale liquor business in Philadelphia. - Membership certificate containing a vignette of a steam engine in a rural setting, presumably Frankford. Also contains filigree and cornice details, including American eagles holding shields, and the letter "D" ornamented with anchor details. The fire company stationed in Frankford was instituted in 1803 and incorporated in 1842. The company was named after the Naval hero Stephen Decatur whose father purportedly resided in Frankford., Not in Wainwright., Issued to Edward Deal on February 19, 1867. - Satiric scene showing high society, i.e., "bon-ton" in a Philadelphia oyster cellar. A "gentleman" descends the stairwell to the swankly decorated cellar where a motley gathering of men drink, smoke, gossip, and suck oysters. An African American bartender serves drinks from decanters in the left of the image. The bar is adorned with a notice reading "City Privilege still without license." Another African American attends the oyster bar. Plates, crackers, salt, and vinegars line the edge. In the right of the image, a sick-faced patron wobbles and spills his drink next to a tall clock with a decorated face and the inscription "Music has charms."
