- Advertisement for the Philadelphia perfumer and ink manufacturer containing an ornate frame comprised of vignettes, pictorial details, and ornaments surrounding ornamented text. Vignettes depict patriotic symbols of the American eagle and U.S. shield and two scenes. Scene in the left shows a gentleman being attended to by his valet. The gentleman has wavy, ear-length, dark hair and wears a blue and red patterned dressing gown. The valet, in a grey suit, looks at a bottle in his gentleman's left hand. The gentleman scratches his head with his right hand. Scene in the right shows a woman, looking down, pulling her fingers through her long dark hair that rests over her shoulders past her waist. She wears a peasant-like dress with a red bodice and green-striped skirt with a paisley pattern. The border also contains scroll-like pictorial details, geometric shaped ornaments, and pattern backgrounds. The background is printed in red and is framed by a blue border. - Anti-labor union cartoon satirizing the several New York workers' strikes for higher wages in early 1836 during a harsh winter; a period of severe inflation, including exorbitant market prices; and an era of property speculation. Depicts livestock on strike for a higher market value near fish peddlers attired in winter garb, including two African American shellfish vendors. Animals include a Tom turkey ordering a turkey hen not to sell her young ones because "gobblers will bring twenty shillings and hens fifteen"; hens refusing to lay eggs for "less than four pence a piece"; a pig holding a banner inscribed "Hams 15 cents per lb exclaiming "I shall Jew them out of a shilling a pound"; an indignant lamb and calf conferring about their deserved increased prices per pound; and a confident steer exhorting the range of high prices for ordinary beef, corn fed beef, and beef shins. In the foreground, two African American men vendors get advice from two African American marketers, portrayed in racist caricature and speaking in the vernacular, about oysters unable to "strike for de frost" and that "gemmen" will not buy open mouthed clams. A white man fish peddler hawks his bass at "whole for two shilling de pound" and cut at "tree shillin" to a white gentleman inquiring about fresh fish. - Racist caricature about free African Americans' summer celebratory processions commemorating the anniversary of the abolition of the slave trade by the United States, an act that took effect in 1808. Shows a Philadelphia street scene with an African American peddler and an African American shoe shiner. In the left, the peddler, attired in a wide-brimmed hat, waist coat with tails, and pantaloons carries a basket and exclaims, "Philadelphia Uly 14, 1825 & little arter." The shoe shiner, attired in a waistcoat and pants, holds a rack of boots and responds "That is de day ob de grand Celebrahsun." The men stand in profile. Also shows, in the background, two African American boys, attired in jackets and pants, facing the viewer, and one with his hands playfully raised in the air. Also contains several lines of text in vernacular and dialect addressed to "Peter Mink, de Chief Marshal ob de day, he Majesty de President” and “Per order Pompey Peterl, President and Snappo Gripes, Secretary" printed below the image. - View of a four-story hotel on a cobblestone street a horseback rider goes down the street while a horse-drawn carriage waits in front of the building., Much is preserved in the architecture of the Green's Hotel which identifies it with the notable residences which once occupied the site. The front walls, some of the original apartments with their heavy chandeliers and a fine colonial stairway still exist. Just where the hotel office is placed was the portal, considerably more than a century ago, of the home of Edward Burd, whose son, Edward Shippen Burd, bought and lived in the large and elaborate residence at Ninth and Chestnut streets. The Burd home was occupied subsequently by Mr. Burd's son-in-law, Daniel W. Coxe, and after his death by several descendants. This house was leased in 1798 to Robert Morris, and it was here, just opposite the unfinished mansion of his hopes called the "Folly," that ruin enveloped him. From here he fled to aviod importunate creditors to the mansion at Lemon Hill. The house at the corner of Eighth street was built by Gen. Philemon Dickinson, of New Jersey. In 1837 it was altered into a four-story structure, which was called the Union Building, and was popular for many years as a meeting place for societies. The quaint old assumbly hall, now a feature of the hotel, remains almost unchanged. The Franklin Library Association, Pennsylvania Literary Institute and Artillery Corps of Philadelphia Grays were among the tenants. The two buildings were adapted to restaurant purposes by Peter A. Dooner in 187-. The two buildings were reconstructed and became Green's Hotel. Mr. Green conducted the house in 1893 when it was taken over by Mr. Newton, who organized the Green's Hotel Company. - Advertisement with heavy street activity showing the Harrison & Newhall Refinery, formerly the Penington Sugar Refinery. Refinery reestablished and expanded as the Harrison & Newhall Refinery circa 1855 at 409 Race Street. In front of the refinery, laborers load horse-drawn drays with barrels as another man in an apron leads another dray past the fenced northwest corner of Race and Crown streets (former residence of Edward Penington). At that corner, a man leans on a street lamp across from a man on horseback in the street and two street urchins on the sidewalk eyeing a well-dressed couple. At the other end of the street, a traffic jam occurs as the barrels on the dray of a rambunctious horse roll off the vehicle in front of a horse-drawn cart and omnibus. A horse-handler and displaced carriage driver discuss the accident in the street as a peddler, the possible cause of the commotion, nonchalantly carries a tray of wares on his head past the scene. Also shows barrels being hoisted outside of the refinery building. - Racist caricature about free African Americans' celebratory response to the abolition of the African slave trade by the United States, an act passed in 1807 that took effect in 1808. Depicts a group of over fifteen well-dressed men sitting and standing and drinking, smoking, and making toasts around a large dinner table. A number of the men raise goblets and/or pipes in the air. Soup tureens are visible on the table. One man, standing, drinks from a rum bottle. In the far right, an attendee, in a wide-brimmed hat, carries away another who is unconscious, his tongue out, and holding a pipe. The men are attired in waistcoats with tails, pants and pantaloons, some striped, vests, and cravats. Some wear their hair in pompadour styles and one man has white hair. The biting toasts address "De Orator ob de day," William Wilberforce, a prominent British abolitionist; William Eustis, Governor of Massachusetts and the disgraced former Secretary of War under Madison; "De Sun" which should shine at night; Joseph Gales, a publisher and secretary of the American Colonization Society who believed that only states had the right to emancipate enslaved persons; "Ning Edwards;" "De Genius ob Merica;" the "White man" who wants to colonize blacks "now he got no furder use for him;" and "De day we Celembrate" and why it did not come sooner. Figures are portrayed with oversized and exaggerated features and their skin tone is depicted in black hand coloring. - Description
- John Frampton Watson, born ca. 1805 in Philadelphia to merchant Joseph Watson and Margaret Rodman, worked as a lithographer and printer in Philadelphia 1833-1866. He began his career in lithography with his brother Charles Augustus Watson in 1833. By 1835, an advertisement for the new lithographic establishment of J. F. & C. A. Watson at 62 Walnut Street appeared regularly in the "Philadelphia Inquirer" and emphasized "that cards &c. engraved on stone for all the practical purposes of business, are equal to those on copper, and at one third the cost." Early works by the firm included the plates "Grisly Bears [sic]," "Ground Squirrel," and "Argali" published in the third volume of the "Cabinet of Natural History and American Rural Sports" (1833)., J. F. & C. A. Watson also printed sheet music covers and maps, along with an 1834 lithograph of Chadds Ford delineated by Swiss artist and lithographer John Caspar Wild in 1834. By 1837, C. A. Watson had withdrawn from the business. However, John Frampton continued to operate from 62 Walnut Street, where he published "Tippecanoe and the Thames" with Philip Banks as J.F. Watson & Co. in 1840. Between 1843 and 1847, Watson operated from 80 1/2 Walnut Street, near Fourth Street, and subsequently from the southeast corner of Fourth and Walnut Streets, where he remained until his death in 1866., Little is known about John Frampton Watson, except that he embarked on a government-funded expedition to the South Seas in 1830, possibly as a draughtsman, with Jeremiah N. Reynolds. In the late 1830s and early 1840s he resided on High (i.e., Market) Street, including 207 High Street, according to an 1837 city directory listing and his address on his 1842 proposed membership cited in the Franklin Institute Board Meeting Minutes. He married Susan Abbott Newbold Penny in 1846 and resided with her in a hotel in the Dock Ward of the city by 1850. They lived at 257 South Ninth Street in 1858, and by 1866, boarded at 739 Spruce Street, where Watson died ca. 1866. His widow provided the address in an "Illustrated New Age" (June 21, 1866) advertisement asking for all debts to be paid to the Watson estate.

The area of Cuba is 41,655 square miles. The island is long and narrow and follows a curved line through its centre; is 720 miles long and its average breadth is 80 miles. The highest part of the island is the range extending in the southwest from the Punto de Maysi to Cape Cruz. There are mountains immediately above the harbor of Trinidad de Cuba in the south, the highest of which is 2,990 feet above the sea level. The climate is hot on the coast and temperate on the higher levels. Ten per cent of the area is, or was, cultivated. There are large tracts of the island still unexplored. A census taken in 1887 reported the population to be 1,631, 687. Of this, 528,998 were negroes and mulattoes. The present population is uncertain. Probably, as the results of devastating war, it has been cut down at least a fourth. Principal cities are Havana (the capital), Santiago de Cuba, Puerto Principe, Holguin, Sancti Spiritus, Matanzas. Before the insurrection, there were over 1,000 miles of railroad in operation on the island. The chief produce is sugar and tobacco. There is also production of mahogany, fruits, honey and wax. Gold and silver have been found in paying quantities. The iron mines of Cuba, all of which are located near Santiago, overshadow in importance all the other industries on the eastern end of the island. The ore of these mines is among the richest in the world, yielding from 62 to 67 per cent of pure iron. The principal imports are flour, rice and jerked beef. - Cephas G. Childs, one of the foremost engravers in Philadelphia, born on September 8, 1793 in Plumstead Township, Bucks County, Pennsylvania, managed some of the earliest premier commercial lithograph firms in the city. Through his partnerships in the firms Pendleton, Kearny & Childs (1829-1830), Childs & Inman (1830-1833), and Childs & Lehman (1833-1835), along with his active pursuit of skilled artists and lithographers, such as Albert Newsam, P. S. Duval and Henry Inman, Childs facilitated the growth and popularity of lithography as a printing medium in Philadelphia., Childs entered the printing trades in 1812 following the early loss of his parents. He was apprenticed to Philadelphia bank note engraver Gideon Fairman of the firm Murray, Draper, Fairman & Co. on Sansom Street above Eighth Street. The following year Childs enlisted with the Washington Guards and began his lifelong involvement in volunteer military organizations, including the Washington Greys of Philadelphia, who elected him Lieutenant Colonel in December 1825., Even though Childs established his own business in 1818, he continued to work on commissions with Fairman, including the portrait engraving of the head of Washington (1823), portraits of General Jackson and Lafayette (1824), and miscellaneous engraved book illustrations. Between 1827 and 1830, Childs completed his most noted project to date - "Views of Philadelphia." The guidebook, issued in six parts of twenty-four plates by local artists and engravers, depicted the landmarks of Philadelphia and was praised in the National Gazette, "we have seen no publication of the kind more deserving of the patronage of Pennsylvania, or more likely to succeed in other parts of the Union, particularly the chief cities. We hope that it will be widely spread.", Between 1829 and 1830 Childs began his lithographic career and worked in the partnership Pendleton, Kearny & Childs (185, i.e., 500 block, Chestnut Street) and printed and published lithographs delineated by Hugh Bridport, E. W. Clay, Albert Newsam, and Moses Swett. The brief partnership ended with Pendleton relocating to New York ca. 1830 and by January 1830 Childs had "the whole lithographic establishment in Chestnut Street." Childs subsequently partnered with New York portrait painter Henry Inman in Childs & Inman. The lithographic firm, often praised in the local press, worked on the seminal McKenney & Hall's "History of the Indian Tribes of North America" and issued city and town views, portraits, political caricatures, natural history prints, and advertisements delineated by Albert Newsam, George Lehman, Thomas Doughty, and E. W. Clay. By May 1, 1830, the firm operated from 80 Walnut Street (i.e., Fourth and Walnut Streets), The following year, Childs set out in the spring on a voyage to Europe to better learn the trade (his passport application dated May 13, 1831). He returned to Philadelphia that fall, with permanent injuries received during his trip, as well as with French-born lithographer P. S. Duval to bolster the experience of his firm. In 1833 Childs & Inman dissolved and Childs partnered with Lehman, an engraver and lithographer with whom he associated as early as 1827. As Childs & Lehman (43-45 Walnut Street), the firm predominately created lithographs of public landmarks in Philadelphia and Pennsylvania, including views of "Eastern Penitentiary," "Fairmount Waterworks," "Philadelphia Arcade," and "Coal Mine at Maunch Chunk." By 1835, his injury sustained abroad and financial failings ended his career in the trade. Duval bought Childs' share of the business at the end of 1834 and the firm was reestablished as Lehman & Duval., Subsequently, Childs transitioned into editing and publishing, and published "The Commercial List and Price Current" from offices at 221 Dock Street. He retired from the "Current" in 1852, and served as the president of the New Creek Coal Company. He owned real estate valued at $20,000 during his tenure with the company. Childs was also a member of the Library Company of Philadelphia and a director of the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, According to censuses and city directories, Childs was married first to Ann (b. ca. 1807) (1850 census) and later Francis (b. ca. 1817) in 1866. In 1840 he resided in the South Mulberry Ward at 365 Mulberry (i.e., Arch) Street. By 1850, he had relocated to “Inglewood Cottage” at 150 Bethlehem Pike in Chestnut Hill. He remained at the residence designed by Thomas Ustick Walter until his death on July 7, 1871.

View looks south from Belmont Plateau showing the proposed buildings on the exhibition grounds in West Fairmount Park. Includes Horticultural Hall, Main Exhibition Building, Memorial Hall, Agricultural Hall, Judges Hall, Ladies Pavilion, Machinery Hall, and U.S. Government Building. The grounds are lined with trees, bushes, and landscaped paths. Includes several fair visitors traveling by foot and carriage on the paths. Clusters of tree tops are visible in the foreground. Ellsworth, the first Union war death, was killed on May 24, 1861 by the Marshall House innkeeper, James W. Jackson. Jackson shot Ellsworth following the colonel's removal of a Confederate flag from the inn's roof. Image depicts a crowd of men convening near a horse-drawn wagon in front of the hotel.
