Title: McAran's Pleasure Garden
Description: Shows a park with tree-lined paths, ampetheatre and an adjacent building. People watch a performance in the ampetheatre and a horse-drawn carriage goes down the path., John McAran was, about 1828, a gardener and florist occupying a suburban tract west of Seventeenth and south of Arch Streets. He developed this location as a public amusement park which was opened on June 13th, 1840, at which time D.J. Kennedy made the drawing from which this sketch has been copied. Fireworkds, music and dancing attracted the evening crowds. A feature was a fine collection of birds. He was induced to join with Ward & McIntosh, in the erection of a theatre upon the site. Title: New Girard Ave: Bridge from Zoological Garden
Description: Photographer's imprint printed on mount., Photographer's blindstamp on mount., Depicts the south side of the bridge spanning the Schuylkill River at Girard Avenue. Measuring 100 feet wide, the iron and stone Girard Avenue Bridge, built between 1872 and 1874, was considered to be the widest bridge in the world at the time of its construction. It replaced an earlier bridge at this site. The bridge, designed by James and Henry Sims, was demolished between 1970 and 1971.

Title: Catha y Tea Garden, 1221-23-25 Chestnut St., Philadelphia
Description: Menu for the Cathay Tea Garden located at 1221-1225 Chestnut Street, Philadelphia. The green and gold menu cover depicts a Chinese woman, attired in a dress and high-heeled shoes, raising her left hand to her chin as she faces the viewer. She stands on a balcony or bridge overlooking a landscape of trees and mountains under a moonlit sky. The menu is in English and organized by number in sections for “Wines and Liquors” (#1-167); “Chinese Menu” (#1-179); and “American Menu” (#181-383). The Chinese menu includes categories for chop suey, chow mein, Chinese omelettes, and a prix fixe “Table d’Hote” with three different options and prices from $1.25 to $2.50. The American menu includes categories for sea food, steaks, salads, and sandwiches. The restaurant advertises music, broadcasting, and dancing from 12 to 2:00 P.M., 6 to 8 P.M., and 10 to 1 A.M. with a note that “our patrons are requested to dance only with their escorts. Description: View looking east down Spring Garden Street from Broad Street showing the Odd Fellows Hall at the northeast corner of Spring Garden and Broad streets (400 block N. Broad). A horse-drawn carriage is parked and another passes in front of the hall enlarged in 1853 after the designs of Samuel Sloan for the benevolent and charitable organization, the Independent Order of Odd Fellows. The roof of the building is adorned with statues representing Charity and Hope, tenets of the organization and red drapes are visible in the second floor windows. Description: Photograph showing a group portrait in a garden at the Deshler-Morris House, including Marriott C. Morris' sister Elizabeth Canby Morris, third cousins Elizabeth Morris Wistar, John Stokes Morris, and Anna Stokes Morris, third cousins once removed Anabelle Wistar, Edith Wistar, and Joshua Morris Wistar, and second cousin once removed Elizabeth Stokes Morris, . David Deshler built the original four-room summer cottage on this Germantown lot in 1752, adding the three-story front addition in 1772. The house was sold to Col. Isaac Franks in 1792 after Deshler’s death. President George Washington rented the home for the duration of the yellow fever epidemic of 1793 and the summer of 1794. Elliston and John Perot purchased the house in 1804, selling it to Elliston’s son-in-law Samuel B. Morris after his death in 1834. The house stayed in the possession of the Morris family for over a century, when Elliston P. Morris donated the house to the National Parks Service in 1948. Title: Commissioners Hall, Spring Garden
Description: Exterior view of the hall containing the district's police station and Mayor's office completed in 1848 after the designs of William L. Johnston at Spring Garden and North Thirteenth streets. Shows the Greek-Revival style building, the largest of the commissioners' halls buildings, adorned with an American flag and including a steeple built by Jacob Berger with a clock made by T. Tyson. Also shows street and pedestrian traffic, including strolling couples, a man on horseback, and a horse-drawn street car. Prior to the city's consolidation with bordering townships in 1854, neighborhoods maintained and housed their own police stations, mayors, and other government officials in commissioners' halls, including Spring Garden.
