Title: Robert Wood's railing, architectural & ornamental iron works, Ridge Road below Spring Garden St., Philadelphia
Description: Advertisement showing the long three-story, brick factory occupied by Robert Wood's iron works at 1126 Ridge Avenue. The central portion of the building looms a few feet over the wings, and is adorned by tall, narrow windows on the second story, with a decorative cornice topped by a statue, bell cupola, and advertising flag. Statues of a lion and two dogs adorn an overhang near the open doorway of the iron foundry inside this central portion, under which a man and woman enter the office and warerooms. Visible inside the factory are several men at a forge, along with laborers working in the left and right wings. A man driving a horse-drawn company carriage emerges from the right wing. Four laborers load a lion statue into a cart on Ridge Avenue. Title: Northern Liberties & Spring Garden Water Works
Description: Oblique view of the front and north flank of the one-and-a-half story granite engine house at the Spring Garden and Northern Liberties Water Works (later known as the Schuylkill Water Works) at the foot of Thompson Street on the east bank of the Schuylkill River. In the foreground, an empty horse-drawn cart is stopped near a pump, where a man fills a bucket with water. A man stands with his arms crossed in the side door, a couple strolls arm in arm, and three men stand and converse at the foot of the stairs of the engine house entrance. Description: Circular advertisement for the hat manufacturer established in 1841. Contains captioned images of 66 types of men's and children's hats for the "Fall" season of 1875. Captions detail style, finish, and colors. In tribute to the upcoming Centennial Exhibition, vignette at top depicts the proposed design for Memorial Hall, i.e., the Arts Gallery at the Centennial. View includes pedestrian traffic. Internal text promotes the quality and styles of men's and boys' hats offered, including fine soft hats, fur and wool hats, winter caps, dress caps, and black silk conductor and imported Scotch caps. Description: Sheet music cover containing an interior view of the crowded concert hall and theater operated by Henry Miller beginning circa 1854. Several men and women sit at, and converse and walk among the many tables of the seating area as a number of waiters serve the patrons. A music ensemble plays on a raised platform with guard rails in the left of the image and several people line a small stage in the center rear of the hall where a small performance appears to be happening. To the right of the performance, the stairwell to the upper balcony, lined with people, is visible. Greenery and vinery decorate the hall that includes a glass ceiling and windows, some open, across and adjacent to the balcony. Description: Glass negative showing a group portrait in the garden at the Deshler-Morris House at 5442 Germantown Avenue, including Marriott C. Morris' sister Elizabeth Canby Morris, and third cousins Anna Stokes Morris, John Stokes Morris, and Elizabeth Wistar, Morris' second cousin once removed Elizabeth Stokes Morris, and Morris' third cousins once removed Anabelle Wistar, Edith Wistar, and Joshua Morris Wistar. David Deshler built the original four-room summer cottage on this Germantown lot in 1752, adding the three-story front addition in 1772. The house was sold to Col. Isaac Franks in 1792 after Deshler’s death. President George Washington rented the home for the duration of the yellow fever epidemic of 1793 and the summer of 1794. Elliston and John Perot purchased the house in 1804, selling it to Elliston’s son-in-law Samuel B. Morris after his death in 1834. The house stayed in the possession of the Morris family for over a century, when Elliston P. Morris donated the house to the National Parks Service in 1948.
