Depicts the crew of the Merrimac, a collier deliberately sunk by Richmond Pearson Hobson to barricade the Spanish fleet in Santiago Harbor during the Spanish American War of 1898. The nine crew men sit in a horse-drawn carriage as it makes its way up North Broad Street near Columbia Avenue. Includes a large crowd standing on the sidewalk and watching the procession in front of a landscaped garden along the 1700 block of North Broad Street.
