Title: Robert Wood's railing, architectural & ornamental iron works, Ridge Road below Spring Garden St., Philadelphia
Description: Advertisement showing the long three-story, brick factory occupied by Robert Wood's iron works at 1126 Ridge Avenue. The central portion of the building looms a few feet over the wings, and is adorned by tall, narrow windows on the second story, with a decorative cornice topped by a statue, bell cupola, and advertising flag. Statues of a lion and two dogs adorn an overhang near the open doorway of the iron foundry inside this central portion, under which a man and woman enter the office and warerooms. Visible inside the factory are several men at a forge, along with laborers working in the left and right wings. A man driving a horse-drawn company carriage emerges from the right wing. Four laborers load a lion statue into a cart on Ridge Avenue. Title: Northern Liberties & Spring Garden Water Works
Description: Oblique view of the front and north flank of the one-and-a-half story granite engine house at the Spring Garden and Northern Liberties Water Works (later known as the Schuylkill Water Works) at the foot of Thompson Street on the east bank of the Schuylkill River. In the foreground, an empty horse-drawn cart is stopped near a pump, where a man fills a bucket with water. A man stands with his arms crossed in the side door, a couple strolls arm in arm, and three men stand and converse at the foot of the stairs of the engine house entrance. Description: Sheet music cover containing an interior view of the crowded concert hall and theater operated by Henry Miller beginning circa 1854. Several men and women sit at, and converse and walk among the many tables of the seating area as a number of waiters serve the patrons. A music ensemble plays on a raised platform with guard rails in the left of the image and several people line a small stage in the center rear of the hall where a small performance appears to be happening. To the right of the performance, the stairwell to the upper balcony, lined with people, is visible. Contains views of the Victorian-style gatehouse after the designs of Frank Furness; "The Dying Lioness" statue after the design of Wilhelm Wolff casted in 1875 at the entrance courtyard; lions, tigers, a jaguar and a zebra walking, standing, and grazing in their caged areas; an elephant, camel, lama, mountain goat, and caribou in fenced yards; buffalo grazing on a pasture; and Solitude, the country retreat of John Penn built in 1785 on the grounds of the zoo (miscaptioned as "Wm Penn's House, Fairmount Park"). Description: Glass negative showing a group portrait in the garden at the Deshler-Morris House at 5442 Germantown Avenue, including Marriott C. Morris' sister Elizabeth Canby Morris, and third cousins Anna Stokes Morris, John Stokes Morris, and Elizabeth Wistar, Morris' second cousin once removed Elizabeth Stokes Morris, and Morris' third cousins once removed Anabelle Wistar, Edith Wistar, and Joshua Morris Wistar. Two of the women sit in the front row with Anna Morris leaning against the woman on the right and John Morris leaning against the woman on the left. The others stand behind them. David Deshler built the original four-room summer cottage on this Germantown lot in 1752, adding the three-story front addition in 1772. The house was sold to Col. Isaac Franks in 1792 after Deshler’s death. President George Washington rented the home for the duration of the yellow fever epidemic of 1793 and the summer of 1794. Elliston and John Perot purchased the house in 1804, selling it to Elliston’s son-in-law Samuel B. Morris after his death in 1834. The house stayed in the possession of the Morris family for over a century, when Elliston P. Morris donated the house to the National Parks Service in 1948. Description: In his memoir, Reminiscences of Philadelphia during the past half century (Philadelphia 1895), J.E. Peyton of Haddonfield, N.J. claims to have lent his name to the recruitment of two cavalry regiments which became the 3rd and 11th Pennsylvania. Taylor associates him with the 18th Pennsylvania Cavalry: In the autumn of 1862 an enthusiastic citizen of Haddonfield, N. J., was active in securing recruits for the "Continental Cavalry." Two companies, intended as A and B, were camped at Haddonfield. Adverse circumstances led many of the recruits to leave camp and to enlist elsewhere. Their names were, however, carried upon the company records as "deserters." Those who remained were, with their officers, mustered into the service and attached to the 18th Cavalry."--F.H. Taylor. Title: Slaves taken from an Arab dhow
Description: Set below the deck of an Arab coasting vessel in Zanzibar, the illustration shows a group of scantily dressed, emaciated male slaves. An accompanying quote from Edward Steere contextualizes the image. Steere wrote, "I hope one may never see again such sights as one used to see almost daily when we first landed in Zanzibar -- the miserable remains of the great slave caravans from the interior, brought by sea to Zanzibar, packed so closely that they could scarcely move, and allowed nothing of food on the voyage but a few handfuls of raw rice passed round to be nibbled at. It is said, sometimes, that our efforts to stop the slave traffic have increased the sufferings of the slaves during their transit, but it was simply impossible to increase the misery of this open and unrestrained traffic between Kilwa and Zanzibar. Even as it was, the least delay caused a large proportion of deaths, and the parties of slaves that were led from the custom-house to their owners' houses presented every form of emaciation and disease, till it seemed impossible that they could support themselves, if only for a few minutes longer."
