Description: Advertisement showing the four-story storefront for the hat manufactory established by Christopher H. Garden at 196, later 532 Market Street. The storefront is covered with signage and adorned with a large model hat marked with the street address "196." A patron enters one of the two open entryways of the business that are flanked by display cases of hats marked "Hats & Caps." Two other patrons stand near one of the cases across from a clerk in the store. The clerk pulls a hat from several displayed on shelves lining the shop walls. Description: Glass negative showing a group portrait in the garden at the Deshler-Morris House at 5442 Germantown Avenue, including Marriott C. Morris' sister Elizabeth Canby Morris, and third cousins Anna Stokes Morris, John Stokes Morris, and Elizabeth Wistar, Morris' second cousin once removed Elizabeth Stokes Morris, and Morris' third cousins once removed Anabelle Wistar, Edith Wistar, and Joshua Morris Wistar. Two of the women sit in the front row with Anna Morris leaning against the woman on the right and John Morris leaning against the woman on the left. The others stand behind them. David Deshler built the original four-room summer cottage on this Germantown lot in 1752, adding the three-story front addition in 1772. The house was sold to Col. Isaac Franks in 1792 after Deshler’s death. President George Washington rented the home for the duration of the yellow fever epidemic of 1793 and the summer of 1794. Elliston and John Perot purchased the house in 1804, selling it to Elliston’s son-in-law Samuel B. Morris after his death in 1834. The house stayed in the possession of the Morris family for over a century, when Elliston P. Morris donated the house to the National Parks Service in 1948. Description: In his memoir, Reminiscences of Philadelphia during the past half century (Philadelphia 1895), J.E. Peyton of Haddonfield, N.J. claims to have lent his name to the recruitment of two cavalry regiments which became the 3rd and 11th Pennsylvania. Taylor associates him with the 18th Pennsylvania Cavalry: In the autumn of 1862 an enthusiastic citizen of Haddonfield, N. J., was active in securing recruits for the "Continental Cavalry." Two companies, intended as A and B, were camped at Haddonfield. Adverse circumstances led many of the recruits to leave camp and to enlist elsewhere. Their names were, however, carried upon the company records as "deserters." Those who remained were, with their officers, mustered into the service and attached to the 18th Cavalry."--F.H. Taylor. Title: Slaves taken from an Arab dhow
Description: Set below the deck of an Arab coasting vessel in Zanzibar, the illustration shows a group of scantily dressed, emaciated male slaves. An accompanying quote from Edward Steere contextualizes the image. Steere wrote, "I hope one may never see again such sights as one used to see almost daily when we first landed in Zanzibar -- the miserable remains of the great slave caravans from the interior, brought by sea to Zanzibar, packed so closely that they could scarcely move, and allowed nothing of food on the voyage but a few handfuls of raw rice passed round to be nibbled at. It is said, sometimes, that our efforts to stop the slave traffic have increased the sufferings of the slaves during their transit, but it was simply impossible to increase the misery of this open and unrestrained traffic between Kilwa and Zanzibar. Even as it was, the least delay caused a large proportion of deaths, and the parties of slaves that were led from the custom-house to their owners' houses presented every form of emaciation and disease, till it seemed impossible that they could support themselves, if only for a few minutes longer." Description: Advertisement depicting a bird's eye view looking northwest at Robert Buist's enclosed nursery and greenhouses on Twelfth Street, south of Lombard Street. Two long rows of hotbed frames extend west from Twelfth Street and run the length of Rodman Street behind a three-story building marked "140" (a preconsolidation address). Men and women stroll along the central walk that separates the two rows of hotbed frames inside the grounds, accessed from Twelfth Street by the entrance gate adorned with the proprietor's name "R. Buist". Outside of the nursery, several men and women converse on the sidewalk. One of the men holds a driving whip, and is presumably the driver of the stalled horse-drawn carriage in front of the entrance. Another driver stands in front of a team of horses pulling a covered cart, grasps the reins, and leads them along Rodman Street toward a man attempting to rein in a rearing horse. Also shows men, women, children, and dogs on the sidewalk. A few trees dot the empty landscape behind the nursery. Title: Andries Africander, a mulatto Hottentot
Description: Portrait image of Andries Africander, a mulatto Hottentot (i.e. Khoikhoi), who served as Harris's driver during part of his travels. A pensioned private in the Cape Rifle Corps, Africander is shown here with his rifle. As Harris noted, and as the engraving suggests, he was missing both his right eye and his index finger. When Harris first made Africander's acquaintance, the latter had already made numerous trips into Moselekaste's country. He was also acquainted with the chief, and spoke a bit of English and Sichuana. He proved, however, to be an unfortunate addition to Harris's party. "A coward, a mutineer, and an inveterate liar," Harris wrote, " . . . Andries caused more mischief and trouble to us by his pernicious example and rebellious conduct when beyond the reach of the law, than can be well conceived by those who have never had the misfortunes to be exposed to the machinations of so dangerous a ruffian."
