Title: Odd Fellows' Broadway Hall. Broad & Spring Garden Streets, Philadelphia
Description: View looking east down Spring Garden Street from Broad Street showing the Odd Fellows Hall at the northeast corner of Spring Garden and Broad streets (400 block N. Broad). A horse-drawn carriage is parked and another passes in front of the hall enlarged in 1853 after the designs of Samuel Sloan for the benevolent and charitable organization, the Independent Order of Odd Fellows. The roof of the building is adorned with statues representing Charity and Hope, tenets of the organization and red drapes are visible in the second floor windows. The busy street also includes a couple with their son walking their dog; a gentleman and woman on horseback; a hurried surrey; an omnibus pulled by a horse-team dressed in regalia traveling in front of the Spring Garden Institute (northwest corner Spring Garden and Broad); and men talking near the fountain completed in 1853 in the center of the block of Spring Garden. Title: The pagoda and labyrinth garden
Description: Active scene showing the pleasure garden resort conceived by Philadelphia lawyer Peter A. Browne that was built 1828 in the style of a Chinese pagoda after designs by John Haviland on the 2400 block of Fairmount Avenue. Couples stroll on the veranda. Horse-drawn sulkies race near a man on horseback and a boy running in the foreground. Also shows horse-drawn carriages parked in a stable. Description: Advertisement showing the medicinal garden of patent medicine dealer Benjamin Mishler. A family and couple stand near the arched entrance of "Mishlers Garden" between two red stone buildings, possibly offices. Past the arch, women enter an enclosed promenade running through the center of the garden of trees, roots and plants. A yellow fence surrounds most of the property, except a section that is bordered by Lion Brewery, possibly another user of the garden. Also contains two promotions signed by S. H. Warwick, 324 N. Description: Advertisement showing the "Spring Garden Tube Works" on Vine Street above Twentieth Street. Signage reading "S. Griffith's Manufacturer of Wrought Iron, Welded Tubes, For Gas, Steam, Water" adorns a doorway that is flanked by spiral tubings. Employees work in the windows of the two-story factory, exit the doorways with tubes, and load horse-drawn carts parked in front of the building. Also shows a side-alley on which a horse-drawn cart loaded with coal is guided to the furnace at the rear of the works. Title: Fair Mount Fire Company. Instituted Febr. 22th, 1823. Incorporated April 19th, 1850
Description: View of the hand-powered Philadelphia-style fire engine of the company that operated from Ridge Avenue above Wood Street in Spring Garden. A firefighter, in uniform, and holding a hose nozzle stands next to the engine. Engine contains double decker end-stroke hand pumpers and is adorned with ornamental details shaped as swans, and a panel decorated with a female figure and the maker plate "John Agnew, Philadelpa." A trumpet hangs from one of the pump levers. Also contains a border with geometric details. Title: Good Will Hose and Steam Fire Engine Company of Philadelphia [membership certificate]
Description: Fire company certificate containing five vignettes bordered by patriotic and firefighting iconography. Vignettes depict the Fairmount Waterworks, including boys fishing on the canal lock; a circular industrial building, possibly the Spring Garden Water Works; company volunteers rushing hand pumps through Fairmount past Reservoir Hill; the station dog sleeping near the company steam engine in front of the firehouse on the 2200 block of Wood Street; and volunteers, surrounded by a crowd of spectators, fighting the fire at a large city building. Iconography includes helmets with the company number "25," fire hoses, trumpets, and belts as well as the American eagle holding the U.S. shield and flanked by flags over the company motto "Our Motto is Our Name, Always Ready for Public Good." Description: Bird's eye view looking toward the city showing the exhibition grounds in West Fairmount Park. The Centennial Exhibition celebrated the centennial of the United States through an international exhibition of industry, agriculture, and art. Shows several of the exhibition buildings, including the Main Hall, Machinery Hall, Memorial Hall, Horticultural Hall, U.S. Government Building, and Agricultural Hall in addition to hotels, restaurants, and the Catholic Total Abstinence Fountain. Several exhibition attendees walk on the landscaped grounds between the buildings. In the foreground, two couples view the vista from near the reservoir on George's Hill and a horse-drawn carriage travels below. In the background, the Columbia Bridge, New York Connecting Railway Bridge, and Girard Avenue Bridge spanning the Schuylkill River are visible in addition to cityscape. Description: Advertisement containing two side-by-side views bordered on top by an ornate floral design. Depicts heavy street and pedestrian traffic showing the neighboring "Ridge Avenue" factory and the "Twelfth Street" foundry of the iron works. Ridge Avenue view shows the massive "Wood and Perot Ornamental and Iron Railing Factory Iron Works" at 1136 Ridge Avenue. Signage advertising "Manufacturers of decorative iron work," "verandahs," and "counters" adorns the building. On the roof, a large statue of Henry Clay stands, and an American flag flies from a tower. Workers load horse-drawn wagons stationed in front of the works as pedestrians mill past. Iron railings lean against the building, animal statuary is displayed on the sidewalk, and employees and patrons stand in doorways. In the street, a carriage travels in the direction of a stopped, packed "Ridge Avenue" omnibus receiving and discharging passengers. Across the street, near a tree, ladies in heavy capes and holding parasols promenade past a man pointing out the Clay statue to his male companion., Twelfth Street view shows the new iron foundry completed circa 1858 to the rear of the Ridge Avenue works on the 400 block of Twelfth Street. Two laborers steady a horse-drawn cart near the entry to the factory that is adorned with a tower flying a "Wood & Perot" flag. In the street, an omnibus is followed by a volunteer riding one of a two-horse team drawing a steam fire engine. Three boys follow and direct the engine. Across the street, a man, potentially a constable, prepares to open the call box attached to a telegraph pole as a family of five promenades down the block. Title: East Pennsylvania Agricultural & Mechanical Society
Description: Fair certificate containing an ornate border with vignettes, female allegorical figures, and pictorial elements related to agriculture and horticulture. Vignettes show the Pennsylvania coat of arms (surrounded by flags) and montages of scenes of life on a farm. Farm scenes include a farmhouse; barns; a woman milking a cow; a farmhand settling a horse; piglets suckling on their mother; sheep being corralled; a field being cleared; and farmhands loading a wagon full of hay. Allegorical figures hold a sickle, cornucopia of flowers, a basket of fruit, and the head of a ram that lays near other farm animals. Border also includes cherubs, garlands of vines and flowers, fruit bushes, and displays of farm produce. Two bales of wheat clustered with doves, a bee hive, and gardening tools form another pictorial element. The East Pennsylvania Agricultural & Mechanical Society was established in 1860 in Norristown following a split from the Montgomery County Agricultural Society.
