Title: McAran's Pleasure Garden
Description: Shows a park with tree-lined paths, ampetheatre and an adjacent building. People watch a performance in the ampetheatre and a horse-drawn carriage goes down the path., John McAran was, about 1828, a gardener and florist occupying a suburban tract west of Seventeenth and south of Arch Streets. He developed this location as a public amusement park which was opened on June 13th, 1840, at which time D.J. Kennedy made the drawing from which this sketch has been copied. Fireworkds, music and dancing attracted the evening crowds. A feature was a fine collection of birds. He was induced to join with Ward & McIntosh, in the erection of a theatre upon the site. Description: Shows a back view of the Wistar and Cadwalader mansions where a garden of Wistaria grows., This rear view of the locally noted Wistar and Cadwalader mansions, at 238 and 240 South Fourth Street, is of interest, especially, as it portrays the original creeping vine, shown, at the left, which was presented, early in the last century, to Dr. Caspar Wistar, by his guest, the French naturalist Michaux, who named it the Wistaria in honor of his host and friend. Title: New Girard Ave: Bridge from Zoological Garden
Description: Photographer's imprint printed on mount., Photographer's blindstamp on mount., Depicts the south side of the bridge spanning the Schuylkill River at Girard Avenue. Measuring 100 feet wide, the iron and stone Girard Avenue Bridge, built between 1872 and 1874, was considered to be the widest bridge in the world at the time of its construction. It replaced an earlier bridge at this site. The bridge, designed by James and Henry Sims, was demolished between 1970 and 1971.

Johnston at Spring Garden and North Thirteenth streets. Shows the Greek-Revival style building, the largest of the commissioners' halls buildings, adorned with a steeple built by Jacob Berger and containing a clock made by T. Tyson. Description: Menu for the Cathay Tea Garden located at 1221-1225 Chestnut Street, Philadelphia. The green and gold menu cover depicts a Chinese woman, attired in a dress and high-heeled shoes, raising her left hand to her chin as she faces the viewer. She stands on a balcony or bridge overlooking a landscape of trees and mountains under a moonlit sky. The menu is in English and organized by number in sections for “Wines and Liquors” (#1-167); “Chinese Menu” (#1-179); and “American Menu” (#181-383). The Chinese menu includes categories for chop suey, chow mein, Chinese omelettes, and a prix fixe “Table d’Hote” with three different options and prices from $1.25 to $2.50. The American menu includes categories for sea food, steaks, salads, and sandwiches. The restaurant advertises music, broadcasting, and dancing from 12 to 2:00 P.M., 6 to 8 P.M., and 10 to 1 A.M. with a note that “our patrons are requested to dance only with their escorts. This rule is for the protection of both you and us.” A one sheet insertion, decorated with a red border of bamboo, promotes three Table D’Hote dinners for Tuesday, August 17th for 85 cents, $1.10, and $1.35. Title: Odd Fellows' Broadway Hall. Broad & Spring Garden Streets, Philadelphia
Description: View looking east down Spring Garden Street from Broad Street showing the Odd Fellows Hall at the northeast corner of Spring Garden and Broad streets (400 block N. Broad). A horse-drawn carriage is parked and another passes in front of the hall enlarged in 1853 after the designs of Samuel Sloan for the benevolent and charitable organization, the Independent Order of Odd Fellows. The roof of the building is adorned with statues representing Charity and Hope, tenets of the organization and red drapes are visible in the second floor windows.
