Title: Odd Fellows' Broadway Hall. Broad & Spring Garden Streets, Philadelphia
Description: View looking east down Spring Garden Street from Broad Street showing the Odd Fellows Hall at the northeast corner of Spring Garden and Broad streets (400 block N. Broad). A horse-drawn carriage is parked and another passes in front of the hall enlarged in 1853 after the designs of Samuel Sloan for the benevolent and charitable organization, the Independent Order of Odd Fellows. The roof of the building is adorned with statues representing Charity and Hope, tenets of the organization and red drapes are visible in the second floor windows. The busy street also includes a couple with their son walking their dog; a gentleman and woman on horseback; a hurried surrey; an omnibus pulled by a horse-team dressed in regalia traveling in front of the Spring Garden Institute (northwest corner Spring Garden and Broad); and men talking near the fountain completed in 1853 in the center of the block of Spring Garden. Title: Commissioners Hall, Spring Garden
Description: Exterior view of the hall containing the district's police station and Mayor's office completed in 1848 after the designs of William L. Johnston at Spring Garden and North Thirteenth streets. Shows the Greek-Revival style building, the largest of the commissioners' halls buildings, adorned with an American flag and including a steeple built by Jacob Berger with a clock made by T. Tyson. Title: John Baird, steam marble works, Ridge Road above Spring Garden St. Philadelphia
Description: Advertisement containing an exterior view showing the Ridge Road entrance to the "John Baird," "Spring Garden Marble Mantle Manufactory" and "Steam Marble Works" erected in 1846. Works include a central courtyard, offices, and adjoining yard marked "Garden Statuary, Vases, Ornamental Sculpture, &c." that contains a variety of fountains, vases, and statues on the platform roof. A cupola adorns a rear building of the factory. In front of the courtyards, gravestones are displayed and workers move large slabs of marble with a lever and by dolly. On the roof of the central courtyard, a clerk shows patrons a selection of monuments. In front of the factory, couples promenade on the sidewalk, a horse is hitched, a couple rides on horseback and dogs greet each other in the street. The woman rides side-saddle. Description: "Fortieth Illustrated" circular advertisement, probably distributed to retail dealers, for the hat manufacturer established in 1841. Contains captioned images of 66 types of men's and children's hats for the "Spring" season of 1876. Captions detail style, finish, and colors. In tribute to the upcoming Centennial Exhibition, vignettes at top depict Carpenters' Hall, Independence Hall, and a buffalo hunt. Building views inlcude pedestrian traffic. Also contains trademark for the firm with motto "Semper Paratus" (i.e., always prepared). Title: Robert Wood's railing, architectural & ornamental iron works, Ridge Road below Spring Garden St., Philadelphia
Description: Advertisement showing the long three-story, brick factory occupied by Robert Wood's iron works at 1126 Ridge Avenue. The central portion of the building looms a few feet over the wings, and is adorned by tall, narrow windows on the second story, with a decorative cornice topped by a statue, bell cupola, and advertising flag. Statues of a lion and two dogs adorn an overhang near the open doorway of the iron foundry inside this central portion, under which a man and woman enter the office and warerooms. Visible inside the factory are several men at a forge, along with laborers working in the left and right wings. A man driving a horse-drawn company carriage emerges from the right wing. Four laborers load a lion statue into a cart on Ridge Avenue. Description: Oblique view of the front and north flank of the one-and-a-half story granite engine house at the Spring Garden and Northern Liberties Water Works (later known as the Schuylkill Water Works) at the foot of Thompson Street on the east bank of the Schuylkill River. In the foreground, an empty horse-drawn cart is stopped near a pump, where a man fills a bucket with water. A man stands with his arms crossed in the side door, a couple strolls arm in arm, and three men stand and converse at the foot of the stairs of the engine house entrance. Description: Sheet music cover containing an interior view of the crowded concert hall and theater operated by Henry Miller beginning circa 1854. Several men and women sit at, and converse and walk among the many tables of the seating area as a number of waiters serve the patrons. A music ensemble plays on a raised platform with guard rails in the left of the image and several people line a small stage in the center rear of the hall where a small performance appears to be happening. To the right of the performance, the stairwell to the upper balcony, lined with people, is visible. Greenery and vinery decorate the hall that includes a glass ceiling and windows, some open, across and adjacent to the balcony. Description: Advertisement depicting a bird's eye view looking northwest at Robert Buist's enclosed nursery and greenhouses on Twelfth Street, south of Lombard Street. Two long rows of hotbed frames extend west from Twelfth Street and run the length of Rodman Street behind a three-story building marked "140" (a preconsolidation address). Men and women stroll along the central walk that separates the two rows of hotbed frames inside the grounds, accessed from Twelfth Street by the entrance gate adorned with the proprietor's name "R. Buist". Outside of the nursery, several men and women converse on the sidewalk. One of the men holds a driving whip, and is presumably the driver of the stalled horse-drawn carriage in front of the entrance. Another driver stands in front of a team of horses pulling a covered cart, grasps the reins, and leads them along Rodman Street toward a man attempting to rein in a rearing horse. Several exhibition attendees walk on the landscaped grounds between the buildings. Title: The Philadelphia Society for Alleviating the Miseries of Public Prisons The State Penitentiary for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania
Description: Membership certificate for the Philadelphia Society for Alleviating the Miseries of Public Prisons containing a bust-length portrait vignette of "Bishop White Presdt. 50 Years" and a "bird's-eye view of the Building's-Grounds and Environs" of Eastern State Penitentiary. Filigree surrounds the oval-framed portrait. View shows the prison built 1823-1836 after the designs of John Haviland at 2101-2199 Fairmount Avenue. Individuals walk and a horse-drawn wagon travel within the prison grounds that are surrounded by a brick wall with Gothic-style entrance gate. The grounds include garden plots. Pedestrians, including a man pushing a hand-cart, a carriage, and men on horseback travel in the streets outside of the penitentiary. Undeveloped land and cityscape, including Girard College, border the prison building. Also includes a descriptive paragraph about "This institution known as Cherry Hill State Prison 'At Philadelphia as the Model Prison of' The Pennsylvania System of Prison Discipline' or "Separate System' ..." Text describes the Separate System of incarceration where "each convict occupies a single cell or workshop" in addition to the construction, dimensions, and utilities of the building, including "seven corridors of cells," gas, "heat by hot water," and "water in each cell.", Issued to John McAlister [sic] Jr. on November 11, 1856. Description: Advertisement containing two side-by-side views bordered on top by an ornate floral design. Depicts heavy street and pedestrian traffic showing the neighboring "Ridge Avenue" factory and the "Twelfth Street" foundry of the iron works. Ridge Avenue view shows the massive "Wood and Perot Ornamental and Iron Railing Factory Iron Works" at 1136 Ridge Avenue. Signage advertising "Manufacturers of decorative iron work," "verandahs," and "counters" adorns the building. On the roof, a large statue of Henry Clay stands, and an American flag flies from a tower. Workers load horse-drawn wagons stationed in front of the works as pedestrians mill past. Iron railings lean against the building, animal statuary is displayed on the sidewalk, and employees and patrons stand in doorways. In the street, a carriage travels in the direction of a stopped, packed "Ridge Avenue" omnibus receiving and discharging passengers. Description: Architectural drawing of an exterior view of the two-story quaint residence. Contains a pitched and shingled roof, covered side porch, gabled windows, and ivy covering sections of the facade. Trees landscape the grounds and two girls are visible on one of the two paths to the dwelling., Probably published in J.C. Sidney's American cottage and villa architecture : a series of views and plans ... (New York: Appleton & Co., 1850). The book was to be issued in ten parts, monthly, beginning in July, 1850. Title: East Pennsylvania Agricultural & Mechanical Society
Description: Fair certificate containing an ornate border with vignettes, female allegorical figures, and pictorial elements related to agriculture and horticulture. Vignettes show the Pennsylvania coat of arms (surrounded by flags) and montages of scenes of life on a farm. Farm scenes include a farmhouse; barns; a woman milking a cow; a farmhand settling a horse; piglets suckling on their mother; sheep being corralled; a field being cleared; and farmhands loading a wagon full of hay. Allegorical figures hold a sickle, cornucopia of flowers, a basket of fruit, and the head of a ram that lays near other farm animals. Border also includes cherubs, garlands of vines and flowers, fruit bushes, and displays of farm produce. Two bales of wheat clustered with doves, a bee hive, and gardening tools form another pictorial element. The East Pennsylvania Agricultural & Mechanical Society was established in 1860 in Norristown following a split from the Montgomery County Agricultural Society.
