Title: $525 bounty Attention citizens of the 14th Ward It is no time to talk of your patriotism and loyalty, prove them by joining Company "G" of the Sixth Union League Regiment, now forming in the 14th Ward, commanded by one of the best officers in the service, Colonel H.G. Sickles [sic] (late Colonel of the 3d Pa. Reserves.) All the government bounties, together with city and ward bounty, will be paid to each recruit as soon as mustered in. This regiment is now forming under the auspices of the Union League of Philadelphia, and is one of the two regiments authorized to be raised in Philadelphia for twelve months' service. Varieties of flowers, plants, fruits, and vegetables represented include begonias, carnations, chrysanthemums, ferns, pansies, poppies, roses, verbena, corn, melons, lettuces, onions, peppers, pumpkins, squashes, and tomatoes. Illustrations include specimen numbers and prices (ranging from $.50-$10), and most include titles. Title: The Academy of Fine Arts on Chestnut Street
Description: Busy street scene in front of the Academy of Fine Arts on Chestnut Street., When the artists and other interested citizens who were the fathers of the first American art institution built their structure, in 1805, upon the north side of Chestnut Street, west of Tenth Street, it was environed by a pleasant garden space. The original structure was burned in 1845. It was rebuilt and, as the encroachments of business forced economics of space, stores were erected in front. The old academy was the alma mater of many artists of note and the repository of a valuable collection of art works. The building was vacated in 1870 and later became "Fox's Varieties," destroyed by fire in 1877. The site is now covered by the Chestnut Street Opera House., Taylor Catalog Number: 40

Title: Andries Africander, a mulatto Hottentot
Description: Portrait image of Andries Africander, a mulatto Hottentot (i.e. Khoikhoi), who served as Harris's driver during part of his travels. A pensioned private in the Cape Rifle Corps, Africander is shown here with his rifle. As Harris noted, and as the engraving suggests, he was missing both his right eye and his index finger. When Harris first made Africander's acquaintance, the latter had already made numerous trips into Moselekaste's country. He was also acquainted with the chief, and spoke a bit of English and Sichuana. He proved, however, to be an unfortunate addition to Harris's party. "A coward, a mutineer, and an inveterate liar," Harris wrote, " . . . Andries caused more mischief and trouble to us by his pernicious example and rebellious conduct when beyond the reach of the law, than can be well conceived by those who have never had the misfortunes to be exposed to the machinations of so dangerous a ruffian." Description: Depicts the front facade from the garden and a detailed view of the pediment over the front doorway. Includes interior views of the right and left sides of the entrance hall, the great chamber, the parlor, and a bedroom., Contains 1 postcard printed in color and 9 printed in black and white., Mount Pleasant Mansion was built 1761-1765 for Captain John Macpherson after the designs of Thomas Nevil in Fairmount Park, Philadelphia, Pa. Macpherson, a privateer during the Seven Years’ War, purchased the estate with profits from these operations. Free white and Black laborers, indentured servants, and at least four enslaved people of African descent, whose names are unknown, worked on the plantation. In 1779, General Benedict Arnold purchased Mount Pleasant for his wife Peggy Shippen, but they never occupied the house. In 1792, General Jonathan Williams purchased the mansion. The City of Philadelphia purchased the property from the Williams family in 1869. On behalf of the city, the Philadelphia Museum of Art restored the house in 1926., Purchase 1984. View depicts sailing ships docked at the wharves adjoining the "refined" and "crude" oil warehouses. Horse-drawn carriages travel on River Road toward the wharves.
