Description: Exterior view of the hall containing the district's police station and Mayor's office completed in 1848 after the designs of William L. Johnston at Spring Garden and North Thirteenth streets. Shows the Greek-Revival style building, the largest of the commissioners' halls buildings, adorned with an American flag and including a steeple built by Jacob Berger with a clock made by T. Tyson. Title: John Baird, steam marble works, Ridge Road above Spring Garden St. Philadelphia
Description: Advertisement containing an exterior view showing the Ridge Road entrance to the "John Baird," "Spring Garden Marble Mantle Manufactory" and "Steam Marble Works" erected in 1846. Works include a central courtyard, offices, and adjoining yard marked "Garden Statuary, Vases, Ornamental Sculpture, &c." that contains a variety of fountains, vases, and statues on the platform roof. A cupola adorns a rear building of the factory. In front of the courtyards, gravestones are displayed and workers move large slabs of marble with a lever and by dolly. On the roof of the central courtyard, a clerk shows patrons a selection of monuments. In front of the factory, couples promenade on the sidewalk, a horse is hitched, a couple rides on horseback and dogs greet each other in the street. The woman rides side-saddle. Title: Centennial Circular 1876 C.H. Garden & Co. 606 & 608 Market St. Philada
Description: "Fortieth Illustrated" circular advertisement, probably distributed to retail dealers, for the hat manufacturer established in 1841. Contains captioned images of 66 types of men's and children's hats for the "Spring" season of 1876. Captions detail style, finish, and colors. In tribute to the upcoming Centennial Exhibition, vignettes at top depict Carpenters' Hall, Independence Hall, and a buffalo hunt. Building views inlcude pedestrian traffic. Also contains trademark for the firm with motto "Semper Paratus" (i.e., always prepared). Internal text promotes the quality and styles of hats offered, including fine soft hats, fur and wool hats, harvest hats, mackinaws, and trimmed and untrimmed hats. Title: Robert Wood's railing, architectural & ornamental iron works, Ridge Road below Spring Garden St., Philadelphia
Description: Advertisement showing the long three-story, brick factory occupied by Robert Wood's iron works at 1126 Ridge Avenue. The central portion of the building looms a few feet over the wings, and is adorned by tall, narrow windows on the second story, with a decorative cornice topped by a statue, bell cupola, and advertising flag. Statues of a lion and two dogs adorn an overhang near the open doorway of the iron foundry inside this central portion, under which a man and woman enter the office and warerooms. Visible inside the factory are several men at a forge, along with laborers working in the left and right wings. A man driving a horse-drawn company carriage emerges from the right wing. Four laborers load a lion statue into a cart on Ridge Avenue. Title: Northern Liberties & Spring Garden Water Works
Description: Oblique view of the front and north flank of the one-and-a-half story granite engine house at the Spring Garden and Northern Liberties Water Works (later known as the Schuylkill Water Works) at the foot of Thompson Street on the east bank of the Schuylkill River. In the foreground, an empty horse-drawn cart is stopped near a pump, where a man fills a bucket with water. Description: Advertisement showing the four-story storefront for the hat manufactory established by Christopher H. Garden at 196, later 532 Market Street. The storefront is covered with signage and adorned with a large model hat marked with the street address "196." Description: Advertisement depicting a bird's eye view looking northwest at Robert Buist's enclosed nursery and greenhouses on Twelfth Street, south of Lombard Street. Two long rows of hotbed frames extend west from Twelfth Street and run the length of Rodman Street behind a three-story building marked "140" (a preconsolidation address). Men and women stroll along the central walk that separates the two rows of hotbed frames inside the grounds, accessed from Twelfth Street by the entrance gate adorned with the proprietor's name "R. Buist". Outside of the nursery, several men and women converse on the sidewalk. One of the men holds a driving whip, and is presumably the driver of the stalled horse-drawn carriage in front of the entrance. Another driver stands in front of a team of horses pulling a covered cart, grasps the reins, and leads them along Rodman Street toward a man attempting to rein in a rearing horse. Description: Advertisement containing a view of the company's oil storage facilities at Point Breeze on the Schuylkill River, a plan of the grounds by Hexamer, and text describing the facilities. View depicts sailing ships docked at the wharves adjoining the "refined" and "crude" oil warehouses. Horse-drawn carriages travel on River Road toward the wharves. Description: Advertisement for the Bush Hill Iron Works originally established by Oliver Evans in 1809 and operated by Neall, Matthews & Moore 1846-1854 on the plot of land that is now between Buttonwood and Spring Garden Streets, facing Sixteenth Street. Shows the bustling complex of several buildings and grounds littered with cylinders, tubes, castings and a pile of coal around which several laborers toil. The workers transport machinery by horse-drawn cart, hoist cylinders onto a dray, hammer castings, push handcarts, fuel the furnace, and labor in the workshops. Description: Advertisement showing the two-story factory adorned with signage on the 800 block of North Sixth Street near Spring Garden. A boy pulls a carriage out of one of the two entries to the building (Sixth Street) as patrons inspect a different model of coach being pushed out by a factory worker at the other. A family walks between the coaches and other carriages are visible inside. Around the corner (Brown Street), on the sidewalk, two gentlemen converse and a couple peers into a factory window. Near the rear of the factory, a laborer transports a sack on his back near a strolling couple past a hackney displayed on a one-story addition. In the street, a driver tries to reign in his speeding carriage occupied by a couple that is being chased by a barking dog as a boy works on the wheel of a factory carriage nearby. A pedestrian watches the scene from the corner. Also shows hitching posts lining the sidewalks and a smaller factory with several smokestacks in the right background. Description: Lovely bird's eye view looking east toward the city from Belmont Mansion, the former estate of Judge Richard Peters. In the foreground, visitors to the property partake of the grounds that are landscaped with trees and small gardens. Elegantly-attired men, women, and children stroll; appreciate the vista from benches and chairs; and enjoy refreshments at tables. Other patrons depart in horse-drawn carriages down a path that winds past the Belmont Water Works and Columbia Railroad Bridge. A train approaches the bridge. In the right background, the proposed Centennial Exhibition buildings, and grounds congested with visitors, are visible in West Fairmount Park. The Main Hall and Memorial Hall predominate. In the left background, the expansive cityscape dominates the view and includes Girard College, the Fairmount Water Works, Gas Works, Rodeph Shalom Synagogue, the Cathedral of S.S. Peter and Paul, Masonic Temple, and the future City Hall. Church steeples, industrial smokestacks, blocks of brick buildings, and the distant Delaware River comprise the vista as well. Also visible are the several bridges that span the Schuylkill River. The bridges include the Columbia, New York Connecting Railway, Girard Avenue, Spring Garden Street, Market Street, and Chestnut Street bridges. Several vessels travel the river. Title: Commissioners Hall, Northern Liberties, Phila
Description: Exterior winter view of the hall as it looked on February 22, 1852, with adjoining fenced property, adorned with an American flag, and containing the district's police station and Mayor's office, on the busy, snow covered Third Street between Buttonwood and Green streets. Several warmly dressed white pedestrians, hall officials, and a policeman mill about and converse on the sidewalk; white children throw snowballs and play with a sled; horse-drawn sleighs pass by; white men shovel snow off the street and hall steps; and an African American man carrying a basket of celery and a dead goose stops in the street and looks behind him and toward the passing sled. A broadside inscribed, "Washington, 22nd Feb. 1852" adorns a nearby building. Prior to the city's consolidation with bordering townships in 1854, neighborhoods maintained and housed their own police stations, mayors, and other government officials in Commissioners Halls, including Northern Liberties. Title: The Philadelphia Society for Alleviating the Miseries of Public Prisons The State Penitentiary for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania
Description: Membership certificate for the Philadelphia Society for Alleviating the Miseries of Public Prisons containing a bust-length portrait vignette of "Bishop White Presdt. 50 Years" and a "bird's-eye view of the Building's-Grounds and Environs" of Eastern State Penitentiary. Filigree surrounds the oval-framed portrait. View shows the prison built 1823-1836 after the designs of John Haviland at 2101-2199 Fairmount Avenue. Individuals walk and a horse-drawn wagon travel within the prison grounds that are surrounded by a brick wall with Gothic-style entrance gate. The grounds include garden plots. Pedestrians, including a man pushing a hand-cart, a carriage, and men on horseback travel in the streets outside of the penitentiary. Undeveloped land and cityscape, including Girard College, border the prison building. Also includes a descriptive paragraph about "This institution known as Cherry Hill State Prison 'At Philadelphia as the Model Prison of' The Pennsylvania System of Prison Discipline' or "Separate System' ..." Title: Wood & Perot's ornamental iron works. Philadelphia
Description: Advertisement of two views with heavy street and pedestrian traffic showing the neighboring "Ridge Avenue" factory and the "Twelfth Street" foundry of the iron works. Ridge Avenue view shows the massive "Wood and Perot Ornamental and Iron Railing Factory Iron Works" at 1136 Ridge Avenue. Signs adorn the building advertising "Wood & Perot," Manufacturers of Decorative Iron Work" and "Iron Railings, Verandahs, Balconies, Stairs, Counters &c." On the roof, a large statue of Henry Clay stands, and an American flag flies from a tower. Workers load three horse-drawn wagons stationed in front of the works as pedestrians mill past. Iron railings lean against the building, animal statuary is displayed on the sidewalk, and employees and patrons stand in doorways. In the street, a carriage travels in the direction of a stopped, packed "Ridge Avenue" omnibus receiving and discharging passengers. Across the street, near a tree, ladies in heavy capes and holding parasols promenade past a man pointing out the Clay statue to his male companion., Twelfth Street view shows the new iron foundry completed circa 1858 to the rear of the Ridge Avenue works on the 400 block of Twelfth Street. Two laborers steady a horse-drawn cart near the entry to the factory that is adorned with a tower flying a "Wood & Perot" flag. In the street, a "Fairmount via Chestnut St./Twelfth & Green St." omnibus travels followed by a volunteer riding one of a two-horse team drawing a steam fire engine. Three boys follow and direct the engine. Across the street, a man, potentially a constable, prepares to open the call box attached to a telegraph pole as a family of five promenades down the block. Contains a pitched and shingled roof, covered side porch, gabled windows, and ivy covering sections of the facade. Trees landscape the grounds and two girls are visible on one of the two paths to the dwelling., Probably published in J.C. Sidney's American cottage and villa architecture : a series of views and plans ... (New York: Appleton & Co., 1850). The book was to be issued in ten parts, monthly, beginning in July, 1850. Title: This diploma was awarded by the Luzerne County Agricultural Society at their [blank] annual fair held at Wyoming [blank] 18[blank]
Description: Diploma containing two vignettes and and a dominant scene symbolizing agriculture separated by borders comprised of sheaves of wheat, a shovel, farm produce, and vinery. In the upper right, vignettes depict a farmer reaping his field with a horse-drawn reaper and an industrial view of a train passing a coal breaker factory across from a coal mine in which horse-drawn coal cars arrive and depart. The dominant scene shows a farm with livestock, including a pig, turkeys, chickens, and ducks milling the grounds near a woman milking a cow while farmhands corral cows out of a yard, transport a wagon of hay from a barn, and plow a field. View also shows horses before a pasture of grazing sheep and other homesteads, the Wyoming Monument (erected in 1833 in memory of victims of the Wyoming Massacre 1778), and treescaped hills in the distance. The Luzerne County Agricultural Society was founded in 1858 by persons interested in farming and gardening with the mission "to foster and improve agriculture, horticulture, and the domestic and household arts."
