- Glass negative showing a view of a richly decorated parlor at the Morris family home, Avocado, at Sea Girt, N.J. A fireplace with a circular screen covering the hearth stands on the far wall. Various ceramics, photographs, and a large mirror decorate the mantle. A table covered with a cloth, piles of books, and a lamp sits in the center of the room next to a rocking chair. Two other chairs flank a small end table against the wall adjacent to the fireplace. Elliston Perot Morris bought property in Sea Girt, N.J. in 1875, where he built the summer home Avocado after designs by Quaker architect Hibberd Yarnall. Morris left Avocado, named after a Perot family estate in Bermuda, to his daughter Elizabeth Canby Morris in his will. It was sold in 1947 after her death. Two horse-drawn buggys and a flagpole stand behind the women. To the right a man wearing a bowler hat with his back turned to the camera walks away. The women wear long dark dresses and hats. Jersey Wash Day, also known as Salt Water Day or Ocean Day, was an annual event held the second Saturday of August near Wreck Pond in Sea Girt. Farmers living twenty to thirty miles from Sea Girt came to the sea to spend a day bathing and celebrating.
