Description: Glass negative showing a row of brick workmen's houses at the former Howell Iron Works at Allaire, N.J. A path and row of trees run in front of the houses. The furthest house on the right has a large hole in the front wall. James P. Allaire (1785-1858) founded the Allaire Iron Works Company (later Howell Iron Works) in 1815. Allaire, New Jersey became a factory town for the company that built engines for steamboats circa 1824. The row homes for workers were completed in 1833, the blast furnace was made in 1831, and the Episcopalian church was built 1832-1836. Financial difficulties and discovery of iron ore deposits in Pennsylvania closed the Company in 1850. Title: The Whitall House, Red Bank, N.J.
Description: Side view of a stone farm house near the Delaware River. People stand on the front porch while a man stand with a cart in the foreground of the image., This picturesque Colonial house stands close to the shore of the Delaware River, just below the historic earthwork known as Fort Mercer, the scene of the Revolutionalry battle of Red Bank, N.J. It was the farm house of James and Ann Whitall. Although alone in the house upon the day of the attack upon the American force by the Hessian troops, the courageous Quaker matron remained in her home placidly engaged in domestic duties, despite the fierce conflict close by. After the defeat of the Hessians their commander, Count Donop, was among the wounded to whom she ministered. This young officer was afterward removed to another house and died at the end of a week. The total loss of the invaders was about 600, including many officers. The fort was defended by Col. Christoper Greene, of Rhode Island. The battle was fought upon October 22nd, 1777. The Whitall property is now a part of the Red Bank National Park and is maintained as a museum under the charge of the Board of Freeholders of Gloucester County. Near the house is a stately monument erected by the Commonwealth to mark the site of the old fort, in 1906. A small monument erected in 1829 is still preserved., Taylor Catalog Number: 137

The Beach House was a popular hotel for many years, reopening in 1920 as Stockton Hotel. Description: Advertisement showing an exterior view of the New Excursion House, opened in 1869, and beachfront in Atlantic City, N.J. Shows guests, sitting, standing, and looking out from the three-story resort hotel with a watch tower and covered porches. In front and near the hotel, men and women walk on the grounds, a man rides on a horse, and several horse-drawn carriages travel. In the left, a Camden and Atlantic Railroad Co. train stops at the hotel. In the foreground, waves crash on the shore as bathers wade into the water using two safety lines mounted between masts on the beach and in the ocean.
