Title: Amateur newspaper collection, 1876-1884
Description: Collection of 131 amateur newspapers (225 issues) from sixteen states. Holdings range from single issues up to eight issues. Most of the newspapers were purchased, and the collection has increased through donations. The collection is open to new additions., Many newspapers discuss amateur journalism and amateur journalism societies., "The advent of the small, toy press, moreover, ushered in the golden age of amateur publishing during the 1870s. Because subscription lists were large and because exchanging papers was an important element in amateur journalism, the hobby spread from the Northeast across the nation, creating a mass culture for adolescents who shared the experience of reading the same stories and debating the same issues. ... Although many of the papers of the 1840s and 1850s generally imitated their adult counterparts by reprinting selections from other periodicals, the juvenile papers of the 1870s were firmly committed to original work. Bereft of stylistic sophistication--metaphor, symbol, character development, and, sometimes, plot--the amateur papers and miniature novels provided a forum for young people's thinking as they used a toy to mark the longer time between childhood and adulthood. Because they were novice writers, the authors often copied or, more precisely, plagiarized plots and characters created by their favorite adult authors: Captain Mayne Reid, Horatio Alger and, especially, Oliver Optic. Nevertheless, in their so-called adaptations of adult work, the amateur editors made significant alterations in characterization and plotting to suit their own perceptions." Title: Hirsch & Larzelere
Description: Hirsch & Larzelere, the Philadelphia lithographic and printing partnership between Edward Hirsch (b. 1847) and Samuel Larzelere (1852-1908), was active 1876-1879. The firm located at 30 South Fourth Street produced circulars, pamphlets, and trade cards. Edward Hirsch & Co. continued at the address until the early 1880s., Edward Hirsch, born of Jewish-descent in May 1847 in Luxembourg, Holland, immigrated to the United States and Philadelphia, as well as gained citizenship, in 1870. Son of Rabbi Samuel (b. ca. 1815) and Louise (b. ca. 1824), Hirsch lived in Ward 13 with his parents and siblings in 1870. In 1876 he entered into partnership with Larzelere and married Matilda (b. ca. 1855) with whom he lived at 635 North Seventh Street in 1882. Following his partnership in Hirsch & Larzelere, Hirsch operated Edward Hirsch & Co., with his brother Henry until ca. 1887; first at 30 South Fourth Street and later at 117 North Fourth Street. By 1900 Hirsch had two children with his wife and had relocated to Chicago. His household included his brother Henry and a nephew., Samuel Larzelere, son of Alfred and Margaret, was born in April 1852 in New Jersey, his long time state of residence. He was married to Ida R. (b. 1847) on December 24, 1874 in Camden, N.J. and with her had six children as of 1900. Following his partnership with Hirsch, Larzelere continued until at least 1900 to work as a printer in Philadelphia while a resident of Camden, New Jersey. His business addresses included 218 Carters Street (1880) and 237 Dock Street (1890). Larzelere died suddenly on October 15, 1908 with a residence in Maple Shade, N.J. He was interred at Colestown Cemetery in Colestown, N.J.

Clark & Brother Company, manufactory of embroidery and sewing thread, was founded in 1863 in Newark, N.J. The firm was renamed Clark & Co. in 1879, and in the 1880s created a six-cord, soft finished thread called "Our New Thread" or "O.N.T." The business merged with J. & P. Coats in 1896, which lead to a series of mergers with fourteen other companies. Title: Accident on the Camden and Amboy Railroad, near Burlington, N.J. Aug. 29th 1855. 21 persons killed_ 75 wounded
Description: Disaster scene showing the carnage and melee following the collision between a Camden and Amboy mail and passenger train on route from Philadelphia to New York and a horse-drawn wagon of an elderly physician. In the background, rescue workers attend to the tangled wrecks of the derailed passenger cars. Some are smashed and lay in a ditch. The mail car remains upright and on the tracks. The horse pulling the wagon lays dead, his guts seeping out, in the left of the image. Onlookers gather on a debris-strewn hill near the overturned wagon and crash site. In the foreground, dozens of evacuated passengers and crash victims lie on the ground and assist the injured among debris and passengers' valises and personal effects. The crash occurred when the train reversed its direction to accommodate a south-bound train on the one-track system. Physician John T. Hannegan witnessed the initial passing of the railcars and assumed he had safe crossing. The new steamer Wawaset leaves the first wharf below Arch Street every morning, (Sundays excepted,) at 7 o'clock, for Bombay Hook & intermediate places on the river & bay. Returning--leaves the landing at 1 o'clock, reaching the city about dusk. A beautiful ride is here offered at a reasonable price. The boat passes quite near to Fort Delaware, giving a fine view of this famous fortification and the surrounding barracks, which now contain no less than 13,000 Rebel prisoners. Good meals provided on the boat!

Description: Film negative showing three children pulling a rowboat up onto the sand away from the shoreline on the beach at Sea Girt. The two boys in front are likely Marriott C. Morris' sons Elliston P. Morris Jr. and Marriott C. Morris Jr. The wear sailor suits, and one boy wears a hat. A dog stands in the sand close to the water. The Beach House is visible in the far distance. Robert Stockton bought the land of what would become Sea Girt in 1853. After his death in 1866, developers bought the land and in 1875 the Sea Girt Land and Improvement Company took over Stockton’s old mansion, added wings to either side, and renamed it the Beach House. The Beach House was a popular hotel for many years, reopening in 1920 as Stockton Hotel. Description: Racist trade card promoting William S. Scull & Company’s Champion Coffee and depicting a caricature of an African American man riding a mule while carrying bags of Scull’s coffee. The barefooted man is portrayed with exaggerated features and is attired in a brimmed hat, a polka-dotted, long-sleeved shirt, and plaid pants. He carries large sacks labeled, "Scull’s Champion," underneath each arm as he rides on a mule. In the right perched on a tree, a black crow says to the man, "Every body uses Scull’s Champion Coffee." An owl on another branch of the tree says, "So they do." The man turns his head back towards the birds and remarks in the vernacular, "who said da dont." Joab Scull founded the business which imported, packaged, and distributed tea and coffee in 1831. His son William S. Scull was in charge of the business under the name William S. Scull & Company from 1858 until his death in 1916. They had a large warehouse and mill at Front and Federal Streets, Camden, N.J. William C. Scull succeeded the Company, which changed its name to the Boscul Coffee Company in 1947. R.C. Description: Collection of over 2500 glass and film negatives, photographic prints, and lantern slides taken by amateur Philadelphia photographer Marriott C. Morris (1863-1948). A member of a prominent Quaker family descended from Philadelphia merchant Anthony Morris, Morris was also a philanthropist, executor and trustee of estates, and founder of the Germantown Boys’ Club. Images include formal and candid portraits of the extended Morris family and friends, views from family travels to Bermuda, the Poconos, and the family summer homes "Avocado" and “Cedar Mer” in Sea Girt, New Jersey. The collection also features numerous photographs of Germantown, including several depicting the exterior and interior of the family residence the Deshler-Morris House (5442 Germantown Ave) and Boys’ Parlor building and excursions. Other images depict Philadelphia and the nearby area, including Haverford College, Pelham (Philadelphia, Pa.), Cedar Grove (Montgomery County, Pa.), Delaware Water Gap, and Olney, Pa.; Haddonfield, N.J., Wilmington, De.; Catskills; the coast of Maine; Lake Hopatcong, N.J.; the Natural Bridge, Va.; Baltimore, Md.; West Point, N.Y.; the Chicago World’s Fair of 1893; views of railroad excursions, including the Catawissa Railroad and Shenandoah Valley Railroad; and Pennsylvania and New Jersey Friends’ meeting houses.
