Title: Elephant House, Atlantic City
Description: Glass negative showing a distant view of Lucy the Elephant, a large elephant-shaped novelty structure with a small pavilion on its back designed by James V. Lafferty, Jr. (1856-1898), in Margate N.J. Houses are visible in the background. Lafferty received a patent in 1881 for animal shaped buildings, and hired architect William Free to construct an elephant-shaped building for South Atlantic City, now Margate. The building was sold in 1887 to Anton Gertzen, renamed Lucy in 1902, and remained a popular tourist site. The building housed variously a restaurant, office, cottage, and tavern. Description: Album of predominantly landscape photographs of the Delaware Valley and upstate New York taken by Philadelphia amateur photographer John C. Browne. Contents include views of Tacony, Cobb’s, Chester, and Pennypack Creeks; Germantown; Fairmount Park and the Wissahickon; Media, Dauphin, and Hamburg, Pa.; and Dutchess County and Newburgh, N.Y. Views also show estates, including S. H. Lloyd Garden on School House Lane and the W.C. Kent residence (Germantown), Mount Pleasant (Fairmount Park), Henry W. Sargent’s estate (Wodenthe) in Fishkill on the Hudson, and Presqu’ile (built 1813, Dutchess County, N.Y.); churches, including St. Timothy’s (built 1862, Roxborough) and St. Luke’s (Matteawan, Beacon, N.Y.); bridges, including the Norristown Railroad Bridge, Ridge Avenue Bridge, and the P.R.R. St. Luke's image also shows parishioners entering the church., Mount Pleasant Mansion was built 1761-1765 for Captain John Macpherson after the designs of Thomas Nevil in Fairmount Park, Philadelphia, Pa. Macpherson, a privateer during the Seven Years’ War, purchased the estate with profits from these operations. Free white and Black laborers, indentured servants, and at least four enslaved people of African descent, whose names are unknown, worked on the plantation. In 1779, General Benedict Arnold purchased Mount Pleasant for his wife Peggy Shippen, but they never occupied the house. In 1792, General Jonathan Williams purchased the mansion. The City of Philadelphia purchased the property from the Williams family in 1869. Title: Dillwyn and Emlen family correspondence
Description: This collection consists of five disbound volumes of letters written to and from William Dillwyn of London and his daughter Susanna Dillwyn in America from 1770 to 1795; and thereafter until 1818, to and from Susanna and her husband Samuel Emlen, Jr. of Burlington County, New Jersey. Although Susanna lived almost her entire life apart from her father, their letters are frequent and deal primarily with family matters and kin. However, there is frequent comment concerning such topics as yellow fever; abolitionism and slavery; and American and European politics, including the Napoleonic wars and the embargo, as well as their effects upon trade and merchants in Philadelphia and London. Moreover, events such as the Federal Convention of 1787 and topics such as the health of Benjamin Franklin, the popularity of President Washington and the trials of a new republic are addressed throughout the correspondence.

Description: Racist trade card promoting Clark Thread Company and depicting a genre scene of an African American man and woman in conversation on a country road. The man and woman are portrayed with exaggerated features and speaking in the vernacular. Shows, in the left, the man standing on a dirt road and holding a piece of thread attached to a giant spool labeled "Clark's mile-end 60 spool thread." He is attired in black boots; yellow striped pants with patches on the knees and rolled to his calves; a white shirt; a red vest; and a green jacket. His straw hat is upturned on the ground beside him. In the right, an African American woman sits in a horse-drawn wagon holding the reins to a white horse. She tells the man, "Ef dat mile end thread don't hold, dere ain't anything - lucky I got a spool to mend yer old clos' with." She is attired in a yellow head kerchief and a red dress with yellow trim at the neck. The George A. Clark & Brother Company, manufactory of embroidery and sewing thread, was founded in 1863 in Newark, N.J. The firm was renamed Clark & Co. in 1879, and in the 1880s created a six-cord, soft finished thread called "Our New Thread" or "O.N.T." The business merged with J. & P. Coats in 1896, which lead to a series of mergers with fourteen other companies. Title: Kunzman, George
Description: George Kunzman, born of German descent ca. 1840 in Philadelphia, worked as a lithographer from ca. 1861 to the early 20th century. Philadelphia city directories first list Kunzman as a lithographer in 1861 at the establishment of Frederick Kuhl at 57 South Fourth Street. Soon thereafter, he was most likely the George Kunzman who enlisted in Company K, 20th Infantry Regiment and served in the military for a year. After the war, Kunzman partnered in Kunzman & Hall with Henry or James Hall at 216 1/2 Walnut Street by 1866. The "general lithographers" advertised their lithographic work of maps, show cards, bill heads, and drafts. Kunzman continued in the trade until at least 1910 following his relocation to Camden, N.J. where he served as the treasurer for the Gloucester Democratic Club in 1913., Kunzman resided in Center City until the later 19th century. He lived with his parents Francis (b. ca. 1800), a clerk, and Elizabeth (b. ca. 1810) between 1860 and 1880, including 421 and 606 Spruce Street (the latter until at least 1885 when he married). By 1910 Kunzman had relocated to Camden, N.J. and resided on 439 Market Street with his New Jersey-born wife Ellen (b. ca. 1872), sister-in-law, and niece.

Title: Colonnade Hotel, Philadelphia. Congress Hall, Cape May
Description: Die cut trade card shaped and illustrated as the front of one daisy and the back of another. Advertises the luxury hotels The Colonnade Hotel and Congress Hall. The Colonnade Hotel was a luxury hotel completed in 1868 at 1500-1506 Fifteenth Street (southwest corner of Fifteenth and Chestnut streets). The hotel was named after the "Colonnade Row" of early nineteenth-century pillared, porched townhouses previously on the site. The hotel was demolished in 1925 for the erection of the Franklin Trust Company Building. Congress Hall, one of the oldest seaside hotels, was built in 1816 by Thomas Hughes, at Beach Drive and Congress Street. The hotel, originally called the "Big House," was renamed Congress Hall in 1828 when Hughes was elected to Congress.
