Description: Collection of primarily 20th-century photographs, ephemera, manuscript and textual materials related to trained undertaker Georgine Upshur Willis and her extended family, including descendants of the African American middle-class Stevens-Cogdell and Sanders-Venning families. Majority of collection is photographs, studio and professional portraits, as well as snapshots of Georgine E. Upshur Willis and her parents Agnes S. Upshur, a teacher, and William A. Upshur, an undertaker and Pennsylvania State representative, at various ages and dating between the 1920s and early 1970s. Includes images of Georgine as a baby, with her parents and grandparents (Charles Sanders Chew and Georgine Saunders Chew), at her coming out party, in her University of Pennsylvania college yearbook and graduation photograph, and several group portrait photographs, predominately dating to the late 1940s and early 1950s. Group portrait photographs include views of Georgine in costume in a 1934 Book Week Play, at her 1949 engagement party and wedding to anthropologist and ethnohistorian William Willis, Jr., recreating in Atlantic City, at holiday events, and at other friends and family gatherings. William A. Upshur portraits include a photograph of his meeting with Richard Nixon at the 1960 GOP Convention. Title: [Robert Morgan of New Haven, washed ashore after a storm in Atlantic City, N.J.]
Description: Depicts people walking along the beach near a three-masted sailing ship, identified as the "Robert Morgan" from New Haven, Connecticut. The ship came ashore at Atlantic City on January 9th, 1884, during the Great Storm, and passed within a few inches of the immense frame work of Applegate's Ocean Pavilion, making a narrow escape from a total wreck and now lies high and dry uninjured on the beach. In 1883 J.R. Applegate purchased 100 feet of beach property in Atlantic City at the foot of Tennessee Avenue, next to his "picture galleries." He built a two tier pier extending 625 feet beyond the boardwalk with an amusement pavillion at the outer end. Description: Album containing 37 lithographic illustrations documenting the Philadelphia brewing complex on Thirty-second Street between Jefferson, Master and Thompson Streets, including exterior and interior views of individual buildings within the complex and detailed scenes of laborers operating equipment, transporting the finished product to and from railroad stations, and loading it onto ships. Shows exterior and interior views of the office building on Master Street; exterior views of the brew house and milling department, machine repair shop and fermenting houses; interior views of refrigerating machines, the first and second floors of the brew house, fermenting room, beer storage, cooper shops, racking room, wash house, shipping department, boiler house, pump room, electric light machines, machine repair shop, the ale and porter brewery and bottling house; and modes of transport including a refrigerating car, delivery wagon and locomotive. Title: Chester County House, Atlantic City
Description: Glass negative showing a large three-story building with a sign reading "Chester County House." The building has a wide porch and wraparound balconies on the second and third floors. A dirt road runs to the right and another tall building stands in the distance on the left The Chester County House, an Atlantic City hotel, was in use by 1862. In 1908 it was bought and renamed Netherland, later renamed again to Lexington. It was demolished in 1967.
