The Grand Army of the Republic was a fraternal organization founded in 1866 for veterans of the Union forces in the Civil War. The politically influential group contributed to the elections of five presidents and began the tradition of Memorial Day in 1868. The group dissolved in 1956 after the death of its last member Albert Woolson.
