Title: Hotel Lafayette. Situated on Broad St. betw. Chestnut & Walnut sts. Philadelphia Pennsylvania
Description: View showing the section of the hotel expanded from the neighboring La Pierre House hotel originally built in 1853 after the designs of John McArthur Jr. A horse-drawn carriage passes on Sansom Street, individuals walk on the sidewalk in front of and enter the hotel, and a man on horseback is haulted at the intersection. Also shows the entrance to the "ladies restaurant", a neighboring building on Sansom Street, and a partial view of the original La Pierre House. An American flag adorns the roof of the building. Description: Large central image depicting the exterior of the school building located at Broad and Pine Streets surrounded by 14 smaller vignettes. Title: Odd Fellows' Broadway Hall. Broad & Spring Garden Streets, Philadelphia
Description: View looking east down Spring Garden Street from Broad Street showing the Odd Fellows Hall at the northeast corner of Spring Garden and Broad streets (400 block N. Broad). A horse-drawn carriage is parked and another passes in front of the hall enlarged in 1853 after the designs of Samuel Sloan for the benevolent and charitable organization, the Independent Order of Odd Fellows. The roof of the building is adorned with statues representing Charity and Hope, tenets of the organization and red drapes are visible in the second floor windows. The busy street also includes a couple with their son walking their dog; a gentleman and woman on horseback; a hurried surrey; an omnibus pulled by a horse-team dressed in regalia traveling in front of the Spring Garden Institute (northwest corner Spring Garden and Broad); and men talking near the fountain completed in 1853 in the center of the block of Spring Garden. Title: Citizens Volunteer Hospital Association of Philadelphia. Instituted, September 5th 1862 Erected September 5th 1862 for temporary relief of sick and wounded soldiers, arriving in and passing through Philadelphia. Closed August 9th 1865
Description: Certificate containing a view showing a bustling street scene around the hospital situated opposite the Philadelphia, Wilmington, and Baltimore Railroad depot at the corner of Broad Street and Washington Avenue. On the sidewalk, soldiers converse, men and women pedestrians stroll, and a female peddler and vendor sell their goods and wares, the latter patronized by Zouaves. In the street, medical personnel and doctors accompany injured soldiers, by stretcher, foot, and on crutches toward the hospital. Men, women, and children walk, converse, and greet each other, and horse-drawn carriages, including possibly an ambulance, travel past and stop near the hospital. Children include a boy carrying a basket and two attempting to help a man with his valise. Also shows surrounding buildings in the background. The hospital provided care to the most seriously injured before their reassignment to other hospitals. The hospital closed on August 11, 1865., Signed Thomas T. Tasker Junr President and F. Title: Citizens Volunteer Hospital. Corner of Broad St. and Washington Avenue
Description: Fundraising certificate containing views of the exterior and interior of the volunteer hospital opened September 5, 1862 opposite the Philadelphia, Wilmington, and Baltimore Railroad depot. Exterior view shows civilians and a troop of Union soldiers standing in front of the hospital as a train arrives. Interior view shows rows of beds lining a central hallway. Women volunteers attend to bed-ridden soldiers and set a long table for a meal. Framed by decorative motifs including the seal of Philadelphia; angels hovering above an able-bodied and an injured soldier in front of columns inscribed "The Glory of the Volunteer"; American flags; and floral elements. The hospital provided care to the most seriously injured before their reassignment to other hospitals.
