The Cenntenial, held in 1876, celebrated America’s one-hundredth anniversary of independence and showcased the strengths of the country’s industry, manufactures, agriculture, and art., Left vignette on verso shows three buildings comprising the Philip J. Lauber liquor and restaurant business at 24-26 South Fifth Street. The buildings, adorned with signage, include left to right: "Ph. Lauber Beer & Ale"; "Ph. Lauber Importer of Wines"; and "Ph. Lauber Restaurant" (partial view). Image also shows heavy street and pedestrian traffic. Men congregate at the doorway of the wine shop at which a horse-drawn cart loaded with wine barrels departs. The monument designed in the shape of a maltese cross by Herman Kirn contains statues of Father Theobold Matthew (Irish temperance reformer), Charles Carroll (only Catholic signer of the Declaration), Commodore Barry (Irish-born naval commander known as the Father of the American Navy), and Archbishop Caroll (first Catholic Bishop of the U.S.) mounted on fountain pedestals. The statues surround the central sculpted figure of Moses who holds the Ten Commandments. The Moses sculpture rests upon a rock-mound within a marble basin. Water flows over the rocks into a pool. - Billhead for the refinery established between River Road, Peters Lane, and the Philadelphia & Reading Railroad in 1865 by Newhouse, Nusbaum & Co. in West Farimount Park. Contains central vignette view showing the refinery complex, including a Treating House, Engine House, Receiving House, offices, and dwelling houses for operatives. A horse-drawn wagon leaves the complex while a horse-drawn carriage traverses the road in front of it. On the riverbank, a man drives a team of mules near a promenading couple and a boat on the Schuylkill. In the background, a train travels and dwellings are visible on a hillside.
