- Description
- View showing the fountain designed in honor of prominent Irish or Catholic Revolutionary heroes that was erected 1875-1877 by the national temperance society at Fountain Avenue and Avenue of the Republic on the Centennial grounds. The monument designed in the shape of a maltese cross by Herman Kirn contains statues of Father Theobold Matthew (Irish temperance reformer), Charles Carroll (only Catholic signer of the Declaration), Commodore Barry (Irish-born naval commander known as the Father of the American Navy), and Archbishop Caroll (first Catholic Bishop of the U.S.) mounted on fountain pedestals. The statues surround the central sculpted figure of Moses who holds the Ten Commandments. The Moses sculpture rests upon a rock-mound within a marble basin. Water flows over the rocks into a pool. Also shows visitors, including a woman with a parasol, strolling around the memorial. Another drinks from a cup at the "Matthew" fountain. The names of the revolutionary heros are printed below the image respective to their corresponding statue., Presented to James J. Yates & Co. clothing store, which began operations on the ground floor of the Public Ledger Building at Sixth and Chestnut Streets in Philadelphia in 1876. Illustrations depict a bust portrait of William Penn and Penn's treaty with the Indians to commemorate the Penn Bicentennial (1682-1882); children walking in the snow and carrying sprigs of holly; a boy sitting on a bare tree limb under a smiling moon serenading cats from sheet music labeled "Au Clair de la lune"; couples on the beach painting, reading by moonlight, and embracing behind the privacy of a large umbrella; swans swimming with flower garlands in their beaks; a traveling hunting party, including two men mounted on horses with a large group of hounds; three bystanders watching a man paint a large sign for A.C. - Exterior views of front facade of Mount Pleasant Mansion (i.e. Arnold Mansion) built 1761-1765 for Captain John Macpherson after the designs of Thomas Nevil in Fairmount Park, Philadelphia, Pa. Macpherson, a privateer during the Seven Years’ War, purchased the estate with profits from these operations. Free white and Black laborers, indentured servants, and at least four enslaved people of African descent, whose names are unknown, worked on the plantation. In 1779, General Benedict Arnold purchased Mount Pleasant for his wife Peggy Shippen, but they never occupied the house. In 1792, General Jonathan Williams purchased the mansion. The City of Philadelphia purchased the property from the Williams family in 1869. - Lithograph showing mules walking on towpaths pulling canal boats in the Schuylkill River in the foreground. Also shows distant views of West Fairmount Park properties, including Belmont Mansion, the estate house and country seat of Judge Richard Peters; the smokestack of the Belmont Waterworks engine house, designed by Frederick Graff in the late 1860s; and Mount Pleasant Mansion (i.e. Arnold Mansion) built after designs by Thomas Nevil 1761-1765 for Captain John Macpherson. Includes a locomotive traveling north on the west bank of the river in the right background. Macpherson, a privateer during the Seven Years’ War, purchased the estate with profits from these operations. Free white and Black laborers, indentured servants, and at least four enslaved people of African descent, whose names are unknown, worked on the plantation. In 1779, General Benedict Arnold purchased Mount Pleasant for his wife Peggy Shippen, but they never occupied the house. In 1792, General Jonathan Williams purchased the mansion. The City of Philadelphia purchased the property from the Williams family in 1869.
