Description: Print trimmed and lacking caption., Poulson inscription on recto: Aug. 1847., Select link below for a digital image., Advertisement depicting William N. Lacey's and Samuel R. Phillips' busy four-story equestrian store at 12 South Fifth Street selling "ladies and gentlemen's saddles, single and double harnesses, and bridles and whips." Saddles, bridles, harnesses, and blankets are prominently displayed in the storefront window and on the building facade. On the upper floors, several employees work by open windows. Elegantly dressed patrons converse near the entryway and four horses are lined up in the street awaiting and receiving service including a pair reined in by an African American coach driver. Partial view of the adjacent building containing the carpenter, W.B. Morrell, is visible. Lacey and Phillips partnership, established in 1845 remained at the site until 1852.

Title: Phila[delphia] Dispensary from Independence Square
Description: Glass negative showing exterior view from Independence Square of the Philadelphia Dispensary's third building, built in 1801, at 127 South Fifth Street, with partial views of adjacent buildings including the Mercantile Library building (125 South Fifth Street), occupied by the American Bank Note Company at the time of this photograph, and the offices of F. Cooper Shapely (129 South Fifth Street). Boys sit and stand in front of the dispensary building while a horse-drawn Knickerbocker Ice Company cart is parked in front of the Bank Note Company. Founded in 1786 by Benjamin Rush, the dispensary provided medical attention to the indigent sick. Morris. Founded in 1786, the Dispensary provided in-home care to the indigent sick and specialized in inoculation against smallpox. Doctors donated their time to the institution, providing medicine to patients free of charge, in return for medical experience. After renting properties near Chestnut and Strawberry streets, the Dispensary constructed its own out-patient clinic at 127 South Fifth Street in 1801. The plan of the Dispensary shows a “Prescribing Room,” an apothecary shop, and a room for patients on the ground floor, and a Manager’s Room, Library, and three bedrooms on the second floor. Description: Advertisement print showing the factory complex on the 400 block of North Fifth Street. Complex includes a three-story building marked "Wm. Dunlap No. 169 Carriage Maker"; wood-gated courtyard; and a two-story building, probably including a showroom, adorned with signage reading ""Wm. Dunlaps' Coach Factory." A couple enters an entryway of the smaller building that also contains signage advertising "E.W. Pearce Saddle & Harness Maker." Description: Advertisement showing the busy four-story storefront adorned with signage on Fifth Street above Market Street. A male patron enters and a clerk prepares sacks on a hoist at the two open entries. Shelves of bound items line the wall of the store. Stacks of bound volumes of various lengths and glass bottles adorn the central display window. At the upper floor windows, several store workers are visible at labor, including readying hoisting ropes, inspecting rags, and working with and carrying stacks of bound books. The windows without employees contain boxes. Description: Advertisement showing the 4-story building covered in signage for the druggist at 16 North Fifth Street. Signs advertise "Drugs, Paint Oil & Glass. English. French. German & Mediterranean Drugs." Through the open entranceways of the business, shelves of bottles on cabinets are visible lining the walls. A clerk reaches for one of the notions as a patron enters the store. Another clerk descends into the cellar in front of the building. Description: Advertisement showing the five-story storefront for "Dickson and Co. Importers of Watches Clocks Jewellery & Plated Ware" at 14 North Fifth Street (between Market and Arch streets). Signage adorns the building, including over a side doorway. Building also contains large display windows where merchandise is visible, particularly plated ware and tea kettles. Title: Dunlaps'[sic] Phoenix Coach Works, corner of Fifth & Buttonwood Streets, Philadelphia
Description: Advertisement showing the industrial complex for the "Phoenix Coach Works" on the 400 block of Buttonwood Street. Complex includes a four-story main building, adorned with street signs, connected to additions and the "General Coach Furnishing Store." Several smokestacks and a tower decorated with the model of a carriage adorn the roof. Signage reading "Phoenix Coach Works" adorns one of the additions, which contains a rooftop crossover to the main building in addition to an entry, adorned with the figures of lions, to a courtyard. A man drives a horse-drawn carriage through the entryway, as above, carriages are displayed on the crossover. Four unhitched carriages, including an ornately decorated one, line the street in front of the main building as a single-seat carriage and a fancy coach with driver and passenger travel in the street. On the sidewalk, a woman, holding a parasol, promenades with a child; a man accompanied by a dog strolls; and two boys pull and push a wheelbarrow. Neighboring buildings (adjacent and rear), including a drugstore, are visible in the left of the image. The shop is adorned with signage "Drugs [sic] & Medecines Wholesale & Retail," an American flag, and a display window lined with jars, bottles, and canisters. Following the relocation of the congregation in 1870, the church was razed from the 100 block of North Fifth Street.

Title: Lacey & Phillips
Description: Advertisement depicting William N. Lacey's and Samuel R. Phillips' busy four-story equestrian store at 12 South Fifth Street selling "ladies and gentlemen's saddles, single and double harnesses, and bridles and whips." Saddles, bridles, harnesses, and blankets are prominently displayed in the storefront window and on the building facade. On the upper floors, several white men employees work by open windows. Elegantly dressed, white men patrons converse near the entryway and four horses are lined up in the street awaiting and receiving service including a pair reined in by an African American man coach driver. Partial view of the adjacent building containing the carpenter, W.B. Morrell, is visible. Lacey and Phillips, established in 1845, remained at the site until 1854. The firm, known as the finest horse equipment makers in the world, won the first and only prize medal for harness at the World Fair in 1851 and a gold medal at the Exhibition of the Industry of All Nations in 1853. The South Fifth Street address was damaged by fire in 1854 and the firm relocated to larger facility at 14 and 16 South Seventh street in 1855. Lacey died in 1860 and the firm was renamed S.R. Phillips Company. The building is seen from a distance across a field dotted with trees. Construction on Independence Hall began in 1732 and completed in 1753. It originally housed all three branches of the Pennsylvania colonial government, as well as being host to the signing of the Declaration of Independence, and the Constitutional Convention. Initially serving the specific interests of bankers, traders, and accountants, by the late 19th century the library became a place for the general public to utilize its collection of newspapers, magazines, and novels. Pictured here in 1858, the library relocated in 1869. The building was demolished c. 1925.

Title: Stand pipe. For West Philada. Water Works
Description: View showing the proposed design for a standpipe with an ornate spiral staircase and statute of George Washington to be erected at Thirty-Fifth and Sycamore streets as part of the Twenty Fourth Ward Water Works (i.e., West Philadelphia Water Works). Individuals gaze up at the stucture from its base as other men and women ascend the staircase and view the vista from the observation deck. Completed circa 1855, without the statue, after the designs of engineers Birkinbine & Trotter, the standpipe served as a reservoir for the waterworks located on the west bank of the Schuylkill River above the Fairmount Dam. The standpipe was removed in 1870., Manuscript note on recto: height 130 feet. diameter 5 ". Title: The old Hurst mansion, "standing back," facing the west, on the northeast corner of Fifth and South street
Description: View showing the former residence of English gentleman Charles Hurst built 1775-1779 on the 500 block of South Fifth Street. Shows the front yard of the building being used as a storage area. Yard contains several wagons, including the wagon of "W.B. Chambers, grocer, N.E. cor. 5th & Pine" and headstones from the adjacent marble yard. Also shows a young man seated on a chair amongst several pieces of furniture lining the wood fence in front of the former residence.
