The square, described by visitors in the 1850s as a bucolic haven within the city, was previously used as a pasture, a burial ground for the neighboring German Reformed Church, and a drilling ground for troops. This 1860 winter view shows the many trees of the square lining paths that had been fitted with rows of small stools to discourage loitering. The square also contained a noted central marble fountain built in 1837 that can be seen in the c.1870 photograph below. The fountain was one of several improvements to the square following the relinquishment of the grounds by the German Reformed Church c. 1836., Digitization funded by a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities (PW-506-19-10), 2010-2012.

Includes several well-dressed park visitors, including a woman with a child in a tram, strolling, in conversation, reading, seated on park stools, and feeding a squirrel. Also shows trees lining the plaza, a guard house, and partial views of buildings obstructed by the fountain in the background. Ornamental border surrounds the view. Built in 1837, the fountain was one of several improvements to the square following the relinquishment of the grounds by the German Reformed Church circa 1836. Square renamed in 1825. Description: Panoramic view looking North toward North Philadelphia predominately showing the area north of Chestnut Street between the Delaware River and 25th Street. Includes St. Augustine Church, 260-262 N. 4th Street (1); Girard College, 2000-2490 N. College Avenue (2); Zion Church, 100 block N. 4th Street (3); Franklin Square, between Race, Vine, North Sixth, and North Franklin streets (4); and Pennsylvania Hall, 100 block N. 6th Street (5). The north side of the 500 block (501-535) of Chestnut Street, with several businesses, dominates the foreground. Includes the office of "City Resor..," "Eagle Hotel" (533), "Washington Hall" (531), and "Woods Confectionary" (187, i.e., 523-525).
