- The Loganian Library Minutes vol. 1, Nov. 7, 1867, p. 346-347: "We the undersigned desirous of preserving for posterity a faithful and artistic representation of Stenton the residence of the Hon. James Logan hereby agree to contribute the sums set opposite our names respectively to be expended in an oil painting by Edmund Lewis of the said house and grounds of Stenton as they exist at present; the painting to be presented to and preserved by the Loganian Library." - Glass negative showing the Germantown Meeting House, a long two-story building with a wide porch. There is a lawn in front of the meeting house and trees behind. The Germantown Meeting began circa 1690, shortly after the settling of the area. Smaller meeting houses existed on this land until a larger building was built in 1869 by Hibberd Yarnall from designs by Addison Hutton. During the 1827 Quaker split, the meeting remained affiliated with the Orthodox sect. - Glass negative showing Germantown's first fire engine, the Shag Rag, standing in a garden. The wooden machine consists of four wheels, a lever system mounted on a platform and a bucket hanging off the back. The Shag Rag was the oldest fire engine in America. Built by Newsham & Rag in England, it was brought to the United States in 1764 for the Middle Ward Fire Company of Germantown. The engine worked to both suck up water from wells and propel water onto fires. It was in use up until 1822, when the Fellowship Fire Company deemed it too antiquated for use. In 1871, it was sold to William H. - Glass negative showing Germantown Academy, a two-story stone building with a steeple. In front of the building is a line of trees, a lawn, a metal fence and a road. Two children sit in the grass while another boy stands to the left. The Germantown Academy, a nonsectarian day school, was founded in 1759. The school had two headmasters at first, David James Dove for English-speaking students and Hilarius Becker for German-speaking students. The original schoolhouse with a prominent belfry was built in 1761. During the Revolutionary War, the school was used as a hospital and camp for the British.
