Thomas stands in the back and while the Sharpless children sit on the step. Isaac Sharpless was a Quaker mathematician and astronomer at Haverford College (founded 1833). He served as Dean of Haverford College from 1884 to 1887, and then president from 1887 to 1917. Allen Thomas graduated from Haverford College in 1865 and returned as an instructor in 1878. After getting his masters in history in 1882, he continued as a professor of rhetoric and history until 1909. He also worked extensively with the library until 1912.
