- Description
- David Doret and Linda G. Mitchell Collection, 2018., Label on the front reads: Old Tun Tavern, Philadelphia, Where the First Grand □ of F. & A.M. was Held in America. Tun Tavern stood at the intersection of King (later Water) Street and Wilcox (later Tun) Alley. It was the location of the first lodge of Free and Accepted Masons in the colonies as early as 1732. The June 26, 1732 Pennsylvania Gazette contains an announcement of William Allen being chosen Grand Master. The Tavern is also regarded as the location where the United States Marines held their first recruitment drive in 1775. In 1781, Tun Tavern burned down. A reproduction was built on the grounds of the 1926 Sesquicentennial and demolished after the exposition ended.

Panoramic views predominately show the Eastern, Western, and Central portions of the city from across the Schuylkill and Delaware rivers. - Collection of prints from the various editions and restrikes of Birch's "Views of Philadelphia," originally published in 1800 as The City of Philadelphia, in the State of Pennsylvania North America; as it appeared in the year 1800. Four editions of the views, purchased through subscription and totaling 44 unique plates including a map of the city and title page with vignette, were published by William Birch in Philadelphia from 1800 until 1828. First and largest edition contained 29 plates, the pictorial views drawn by Thomas Birch and engraved by Samuel Seymour between 1798 and 1800; with the map and title page executed by script engraver William Barker. Bookseller Robert Campbell is listed as a seller on many of these plates, but appears to have been disassociated with the project before publication of the bound volume. Second edition of 22 plates was published in 1804. Third edition of 14 plates was published in 1809. Fourth edition of 12 plates was published between 1827 and 1828. The first and second edition were printed by Philadelphia printer, Richard Folwell. The later editions, predominately completed by William Birch alone, contained reissues of selected plates from the first edition as well as new engravings of prominent city structures erected after 1800. In the 1840s restrikes of five plates were produced by bookseller Robert Desilver, and in the 1860s, twelve by the antiquarian John McAllister, Jr; many of the restrikes originally published in the fourth edition. Collection also contains the second edition copper plate of the Bank of Pennsylvania, and the fourth edition copper plate of The Late Theatre in Chestnut Street., Series of late 18th and early 19th-century views of principal sections of the city of Philadelphia including primary streets, government buildings, local landmarks, and financial, religious, educational, and benevolent institutions. The series, the first of its kind in the United States, was created to attract new citizens and to illustrate to an international audience the vitality of the nation's premiere city. The views focus on structures, but also contain lively depictions of daily street life in Philadelphia. Plates depict Philadelphia's Delaware River port with the Penn Treaty Tree; several street views including Arch Street, High (Market) Street, and Third Street; city markets; city banks, such as the Bank of the U.S.; the State House (Independence Hall); Congress Hall; prominent churches, such as Christ Church; Pennsylvania Hospital; Library and Surgeon's Hall; Chestnut Street Theatre; the Alms House; Walnut Street Jail; the Water-Works; and the Schuylkill Bridge., See S. - Bird's eye view designed as a grid plan looking southeast from Frankford Road (Northeast Philadelphia) toward the Delaware River showing the city between Westmoreland Street and a few blocks south of Columbia Street. Predominately depicts the open land surrounding the Aramingo Canal, Reading Railroad Depot between Lehigh Avenue and Somerset Street, and the Philadelphia, Trenton, and New York Railroad line. A few dwellings, churches, and other structures comprise the landscape with clusters and heavier congestion of buildings visible near Columbia Street. In the foreground, dwellings, most with plots of ground, a church, and the "Second & Third Street Passenger Railway Depot" line Frankford Road. Two street cars, one marked "Second & Third St.," travel in the street. In the background, congested blocks of buildings forms the majority of the cityscape. View also includes the Port Richmond railroad terminus; a train traveling on the Philadelphia, Trenton and New York Railroad line; locomotives pulling coal cars on the Reading Railroad line; industrial buildings; a small number of trees; and street names. The 25th Ward comprised of parts of the 19th and 23rd wards was formed in 1861. - Anniversary reproduction of the contracted Scull & Heap panoramic cityscape view originally published by London engraver Thomas Jeffreys in 1756 showing Philadelphia from across the Delaware River. Depicts the riverfront (South to Vine streets) developed with residential and mercantile buildings, piers and wharves, and major landmarks. Landmarks (numbered in the print) include Christ Church, the State House, Presbyterian Church, Dutch Calvinist Church, the Court House, Quaker Meeting House, High Street Wharf, Mulberry, Sassafrass, Vine and Chestnut streets, the drawbridge, and "cornmill" on Windmill Island. Pedestrian traffic is visible along the riverfront and heavy maritime traffic, including a ferry transporting cattle to New Jersey, dominates the foreground. Also contains insets of "The Battery" (built 1747 at the foot of Wharton Street), "The State House," and "A Plan of the City of Philadelphia" (street grid); "A description of the situation, harbour &c of the city and port of Philadelphia" with a legend corresponding to the numbered landmarks; and text and charts explicating "Philadelphia in 1854" that expand upon the original description.
