Established in 1854. General George Meade opened the playing grounds in Nicetown where the Germantown Club played cricket against their rival team, the Young America Club. McKim, Mead & White designed the main clubhouse in 1891. - Exterior views of the octagonal shaped Price Homestead, incorporated into the Germantown Cricket Club (or Manheim Grounds) as the Ladies' Club House. The ladies were responsible for maintaining the garden between the club and the dormitories. They were offered a bicycle membership in the winter months and were also provided with two putting greens. Whist matches (the forerunner of bridge) were popular in the 1890s., The Germantown Cricket Club was established in 1854. - View showing the working central marble fountain in the public square, originally known as the Northeast Square, laid out between Race, Vine, North Sixth, and North Franklin streets. Built in 1837, the fountain was one of several improvements to the square following the relinquishment of the grounds by the German Reformed Church circa 1836. - View showing the Lincoln Monument at the entrance (Kelly and Lemon Hill Drives) of Fairmount Park surrounded by male and female spectators. Sculpted by Randolph Rogers, Abraham Lincoln is depicted seated with a quill in his hand after just signing the Emancipation Proclamation. The statue rests upon a pedestal adorned with sculpted garland, bronze eagles, and the City of Philadelphia's Coat of Arms. The granite base is adorned with four panels inscribed with a dedication to and quotes from Lincoln of which two are visible. Unveiled in September 1871, the monument was commissioned by the Lincoln Monument Association, one of the first such associations formed in the country to raise funds for a city monument in memory of Lincoln.
