Description: Album containing 37 lithographic illustrations documenting the Philadelphia brewing complex on Thirty-second Street between Jefferson, Master and Thompson Streets, including exterior and interior views of individual buildings within the complex and detailed scenes of laborers operating equipment, transporting the finished product to and from railroad stations, and loading it onto ships. Shows exterior and interior views of the office building on Master Street; exterior views of the brew house and milling department, machine repair shop and fermenting houses; interior views of refrigerating machines, the first and second floors of the brew house, fermenting room, beer storage, cooper shops, racking room, wash house, shipping department, boiler house, pump room, electric light machines, machine repair shop, the ale and porter brewery and bottling house; and modes of transport including a refrigerating car, delivery wagon and locomotive. Description: Shows a line of civilians near a large flagpole watching the regiment drill in front of their tents at the camp near East Falls, Philadelphia. Civilians include men and women on horseback, women in a carriage, a family with their pet dog, and a child playing with a hoop. Description: Print containing an exterior view and three titled interior views of the saloon and hospital of the volunteer relief agency located near the Navy Yard at Swanson and Washington Avenues. Exterior view shows heavy street activity. A Philadelphia, Wilmington & Baltimore Railroad train stops on the grounds in front of a cheering crowd of spectators. Title: Cooper Shop Volunteer Refreshment Saloon, the first opened for Union Volunteers in the United States. 1009 Otsego St. Philadelphia
Description: Print containing an exterior and interior view of the Cooper Shop Volunteer Refreshment Saloon situated near the Philadelphia, Wilmington & Baltimore Railroad station, the transportation hub between the North and the South. Exterior view shows recently arrived troops marching toward and into the saloon passed civilians and intermingling soldiers, including Zouaves. Banners and flags promoting the Cooper Shop and soliciting contributions adorn the saloon buildings. Interior view shows the saloon committee gathered in the dining hall in front of a long table at which soldiers dine. Female volunteers attend to the men who also stand at a dining bar. Title: William Russell Birch Collection
Description: Collection containing primarily engravings, watercolors, and drawings executed by English-born artist and engraver William Birch and his descendants between the 18th and later 19th century. Several of the graphic materials are by William Birch and represent engraved work he completed in Britain before 1794 and following his immigration to the United States that same year. His British work includes plates from his unpublished satiric volume “The Busy World, or London Dissected ...” (ca. 1792-ca. 1793) showing a charlatan at work, a fight between Richard Humphreys and Daniel Mendoza, a May Day procession, and rag dealers (P.2016.50.28-33); loose plates from his book of British landscapes “Les Delices de la Grande Bretagne” (1791) (P.2016.50.34, 36, 42); the rural and scenic “The Porcupine Inn Yard Rushmore Hill” (p.2016.50.38); the disaster print “The Great Fire of London in the Year 1666” (P.2016.50.55); and portraits of the poetical character Secander (P.2016.50.40) and his mentor “Sir Joshua Reynolds” (P.2016.50.22). His American work includes variant editions of plates from his “Views of Philadelphia” originally published as a series 1798-1800 (P.2016.62.21-37); variant editions of plates from his “Country Seats” originally published in 1808 (P.2016.62.38-45a); and the 1800 commemorative portrait “George Washington. Birch was also one of the most important landscape artists in America’s Federal period. He engraved and published the first viewbook of an American city, "The City of Philadelphia in the Year… 1800" and the respected "The Country Seats of the United States of North America" in 1804. His son Thomas Birch (1779-1851) assisted him in the drawing and engraving of his viewbooks. He became a respected artist in his own right and specialized in marine paintings.

Title: View of the reception of the 29th Regiment, P. V., at Philadelphia
Description: An innovatively designed view of the December 23, 1863 procession of the Pennsylvania Volunteer regiment in honor of their heroic service with the Army of the Potomac. Depicts the procession as a serpentine with the order of procession arranged from top to bottom, with a large eagle, holding an American shield, and patriotic flags by the "Ladies for the 29th" flanked by banners reading "Welcome Home" above the entire view. Soldiers on horseback lead the procession, followed by infantrymen transported in horse-drawn wagons, with one also pulling a cannon, which are followed by a small brass military band. After the musicians, the 29th Regiment marches on foot, some carrying flags, amongst which additional military bands and officers on horse-back also process. Horse-drawn volunteer fire company ambulances carrying soldiers follow the troops, including the vehicles of Northern Liberty Fire Co. no. 1, Vigilant Fire Co., Assistance Fire Co., Weccacoe, Southwark Hose Co., and Hope Hose Company. Along the route men, women, and children watch and join the procession, shake soldier's hands, and cheer. Also shows two boys in a scuffle among the spectators., Buildings line the route, most in shadowy, partial views except the Cooper Shop Soldiers Home at Race and Crown (opened December 1863) and the adjacent buildings near the top of the view. Women crowd the windows of the home and a large American flag marked "Cooper Shop Soldiers Home" stands in front of the building. Also contains the names by Field and Staff Officers, Non-Commissioned Staff, and by Company, of the "Veterans of the 29th," including the African American Company K in addition to the names of the "Board of Managers of the Cooper Shop Soldiers' Home." The procession commenced at about one o'clock from Market Street Bridge down Market Street to Twenty-First Street eventually arriving at the Cooper Shop Soldiers Home where the members of the 29th regiment had dinner before proceeding to the National Guards Hall (518-520 Race Street) to be welcomed by Colonel John Price Wetherill. Title: Civil War Volunteer Saloons and Hospitals Ephemera Collection. 1861-1868 (inclusive)
Description: The Civil War Volunteer Saloons and Hospitals Ephemera Collection holds ephemera and a few pieces of correspondence (including letters to and from Samuel Bradford Fales, William M. Cooper, and Arad Barrows) that illustrate and describe the workings of the Cooper Shop Volunteer Refreshment Saloon, the Union Volunteer Refreshment Saloon, and both of their hospitals. The ephemera is somewhat similar for each group, and consists primarily of donation acknowledgements, event tickets and programs, flyers, and circular letters that the committees used to raise funds., At the start of the American Civil War, thousands of enlisted men from the northeast arrived in Philadelphia on their way to fight in the South. No government or military agencies had made provisions for feeding or caring for these transients, so Philadelphians citizens founded the Cooper Shop Volunteer Refreshment Saloon and the Union Volunteer Refreshment Saloon. Both saloons opened for service in late May 1861. At no charge to the servicemen, they provided meals, newspapers, bathing facilities, changes of underwear and socks, and assistance in writing letters to families. Between them, the saloons operated twenty-four hours a day and depended solely on contributions of time and goods from neighborhood citizens and merchants. Those donations were supplemented by funds raised at a benefit fairs, concerts, and lectures held around the city, some of which benefited both organizations.

Description: Certificate containing a view showing a bustling street scene around the hospital situated opposite the Philadelphia, Wilmington, and Baltimore Railroad depot at the corner of Broad Street and Washington Avenue. On the sidewalk, soldiers converse, men and women pedestrians stroll, and a female peddler and vendor sell their goods and wares, the latter patronized by Zouaves. In the street, medical personnel and doctors accompany injured soldiers, by stretcher, foot, and on crutches toward the hospital. Men, women, and children walk, converse, and greet each other, and horse-drawn carriages, including possibly an ambulance, travel past and stop near the hospital. Children include a boy carrying a basket and two attempting to help a man with his valise. Also shows surrounding buildings in the background. Lorah “Among the Fens.” Portraiture also includes a portrait taken in Blandon and captioned “Black Annie” and shows an older Black woman standing on the steps of probably a general store and attired in a kerchief, heavy jacket, and skirt. She wears a tambourine at her waist and walks with a cane. A few portraits depict women in chicken coops and Ellen Lorah holding a goose. Several portraits are also annotated with humorful and wry-toned captions, including a series of images of individuals posed to represent “Sports," “Obeying,” “Cherubs,” “Temptation,” and “Just for Fun.” Many of the photographs include objects of the everyday, including horse-drawn vehicles, water pumps, wash tubs and a hand-powered washer, baby carriages and rockers and other children’s furnishings, dolls and stuffed animals, and an automobile. Her siblings included Daniel Clement Lorah (b. 1874), Josiah Curtis Lorah (1876-1957), Allen Harvery Lorah (1886-1967), and William Chester Lorah (1888-1918).
