Gray's Ferry Bridge - Schuylkill River., Photographer's manuscript note on verso: Do you remember the story of the bloodthirsty buncaneers [sic] -- how they dug holes in the earth and buried their treasure, how your heart thumped with excitement as their doings were told or read. Perhaps you did not have an opportunity to dig holes for the purpose of burying or finding treasure. These youngsters have, and are in a way, exercising that privlidge [sic]. Hence what is lost in a cozy playroom, is found in the freedom of the outdoors. But these free lances are not burying or seeking gold. Truth to tell it was a bitter cold day and there was a high wind, so these pirates were engaged in digging fire holes in the side of the ditch, for the verry [sic] pratical [sic] purpose of arranging a set of ovens, firing them and so keeping warm. Description: Fashion advertisement containing two panelled scenes of 18 elegantly attired men, women, and children in a parlor and outdoor setting. Upper panel shows the parlor scene with 7 men, 2 boys and a woman socializing. Most of the men wear suits with striped pants, long coats, bow ties or a cravat and hold top hats and canes. The boys who cozy up to their seated father, wear a military style suit or a dress and pants. The woman, seated on a chaise lounge, wears a bonnet and holds a riding crop. Furnishings include a fireplace, mosaic carpeting, sofa, and a piano. Description: View showing the laboratory complex established in 1848 on Ridge Avenue near a covered bridge in Schuylkill Falls (i.e., East Falls). Within the complex, laborers haul goods by horse among the several stone buildings, smoke stacks, and trees. Near the Schuylkill River in the foreground, other laborers move crates by a pulley on a pier. Also shows a man on foot and a wagon entering the bridge, a steamboat traversing the water, and a train traveling past the complex and several adjacent lots of pasture land in the background.
