- Fashion advertisement containing two panelled scenes of 18 elegantly attired men, women, and children in a parlor and outdoor setting. Upper panel shows the parlor scene with 7 men, 2 boys and a woman socializing. Most of the men wear suits with striped pants, long coats, bow ties or a cravat and hold top hats and canes. The boys who cozy up to their seated father, wear a military style suit or a dress and pants. The woman, seated on a chaise lounge, wears a bonnet and holds a riding crop. Furnishings include a fireplace, mosaic carpeting, sofa, and a piano. Lower panel shows 7 men and a woman at an outdoor scene along the banks of the Schuylkill River across from the Blockley Almshouse and Schuylkill Permanent Bridge. The men wear fur-trimmed overcoats, a cloak with patterned lining, patterned pants, top hats, and a cap. Many hold canes or a riding crop and one man leans on a hitching post. The woman, turned to her side and her face obscured by a bonnet, wears a cloak and holds a muff. Most of the depicted men have some facial hair. - West view of Schuylkill Falls Laboratory. Powers & Weightman, manufacturing chemists, Philadelphia
- Description
- View showing the laboratory complex established in 1848 on Ridge Avenue near a covered bridge in Schuylkill Falls (i.e., East Falls). Within the complex, laborers haul goods by horse among the several stone buildings, smoke stacks, and trees. Near the Schuylkill River in the foreground, other laborers move crates by a pulley on a pier. Also shows a man on foot and a wagon entering the bridge, a steamboat traversing the water, and a train traveling past the complex and several adjacent lots of pasture land in the background. In 1847, Powers & Weightman succeeded Farr & Kunzi (established in 1818), and became internationally renown for their manufacture of medicinal and other fine chemicals. The company was the first to introduce quinine to the United States. A second factory complex operated between 9th, Parrish, Brown, and Darien Streets. Market Street runs down the center of the view. Shows the residential, commercial, industrial, religious, educational, and cultural buildings lining the streets and outer lying areas of Center City. Also shows parts of West Philadelphia, Windmill Island, and Camden, NJ. and public utilities, bridges, railroad depots, and reservoirs. Includes from west to east, grounds for the Agricultural Society Fair of 1856, the Woodlands, Blockley Almshouse, the Upper Ferry Bridge, Market Street Bridge, the two Gas Works, Fairmount Water Works, Girard College, Eastern State Penitentiary, the Naval Asylum, Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul, St. Mark's Church, Christ Church, Independence Hall, Pennsylvania Hospital, St. Peter's Church, and Spark's Shot Tower.
