Title: New market, in South Second Street Philadelphia
Description: Street scene with a view of the New Market shed on South Second Street. Depicts a group of men, women, and children with a dog, possibly a procession of a butcher's trade association, gathered across from the shed and by a bull decorated with garlands of flowers. An African American man fiddle player entertains the group as an African American boy and a dog runs toward them. Attached to the back of the shed is the fire engine house with cupola, known as the "headhouse." The New Market, erected about 1745, was created following a petition by the growing population of South Philadelphia residents who found it a hardship to cross Dock Creek to reach the High Street Market. Description: Album containing 37 lithographic illustrations documenting the Philadelphia brewing complex on Thirty-second Street between Jefferson, Master and Thompson Streets, including exterior and interior views of individual buildings within the complex and detailed scenes of laborers operating equipment, transporting the finished product to and from railroad stations, and loading it onto ships. Shows exterior and interior views of the office building on Master Street; exterior views of the brew house and milling department, machine repair shop and fermenting houses; interior views of refrigerating machines, the first and second floors of the brew house, fermenting room, beer storage, cooper shops, racking room, wash house, shipping department, boiler house, pump room, electric light machines, machine repair shop, the ale and porter brewery and bottling house; and modes of transport including a refrigerating car, delivery wagon and locomotive. Description: Collection of drawings, predominantly pencil, depicting views of prominent sites in Philadelphia, mainly exteriors. Includes the residence of William Penn, the Slate Roof House (built circa 1687-circa 1699 and demolished 1867, 100 block of South Second Street), Benjamin Franklin Bridge (built 1922-1926), Rittenhouse Square, and John Wanamaker department store (built 1902-1910, 1300-1326 Market). Many of the exterior views include pedestrian traffic. The three Wanamaker’s pencil sketches show interiors of the department store, including the restaurant, balconies, American flags, and arm chairs. The sketches portray an impressionist aesthetic. Lewis (1791-1858) of John A. Lewis & Co. and Eliza Mower (1788-1885), was a banker, genealogist, and artist descended from Hessian solder and Philadelphia Prothonotary Johann A. P. Lewis [formerly Ludewig]. Lewis studied art with G. W. Holmes, frequently exhibited at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and Artist's Fund Society, and was a member of several organizations, including the Numismatic & Antiquarian Society of Philadelphia, Genealogical Society of Philadelphia, and the Library Company. He married Anne C. Larcombe on July 1, 1851 and with her had two children Alberta (1854-1934) and Hermann (b. 1863) and grandchildren Hildegarde Allen (b. 1885), editor and publisher Frederick Lewis Allen (1890-1954), Barbara Lewis [Shepperd] (b. 1885), Margaret Lewis [Browne] (b. 1886), and George Draper Lewis (b. 1888).
