Constructed between 1795 and 1797 as the First Bank of the United States after designs by Samuel Blodget, Jr., the building still stands at 120 South Third Street. Photographers William and Frederick Langenheim captured this view of a crowd gathered in front of the bank, the temporary headquarters of the militia in the aftermath of anti-Catholic riots, on May 9, 1844, creating the earliest known Philadelphia “news” photograph.
