Ford, saddlery hardware, at 46-48 N. 3rd Street above Market Street. Building heavily adorned with signage. Also shows adjacent businesses including William P. Wilstach & Co. (38 N. 3rd), saddlery hardware; Yard, Gillmore & Co., silk goods (40-42 N. 3rd); and Lippincott, Coffin & Co., dry goods and trimmings (50 N. 3rd). This photograph, taken in May of 1859, depicts the former mansion of wool merchant Benjamin Bullock on Third Street [above] Market Street. Modified with display windows at street level, two businesses - James L. Rahn’s hosiery and glove shop, and John M. Ford’s saddlery and hardware store - occupy the building. Other homes on this block had already been replaced by taller commercial buildings.
