Exterior view showing the place where Colonel Elmer E. Ellsworth died during the Union occupation of Alexandria. Ellsworth, the first Union war death, was killed on May 24, 1861 by the Marshall House innkeeper, James W. Jackson. Jackson shot Ellsworth following the colonel's removal of a Confederate flag from the inn's roof. Image depicts a crowd of men convening near a horse-drawn wagon in front of the hotel.
