- Description
- Certificate, containing an allegorical scene, issued in recognition of the military service of Pennsylvania volunteers during the Civil War. Shows the female allegorical figure of Columbia (i.e., United States), her head covered by the American flag, holding laurel wreaths and the Constitution in her outstretched hands, as she stands over a woman huddled on the ground with her children. To the left, a soldier, holding a rifle, stands on his guard, in front of them, while at his feet lay the ruins of a cannon. In the background, Independence Hall, cityscape, and the masts of ships are visible. Also includes a gold border with ornamental details, American eagles, and a variation of the Pennsylvania state seal., Philadelphia on Stone, POS 371, Historical Society of Pennsylvania: Bc 525 S 395, Muringer, a French-born lithographer, was probably the father-in-law of Christian Schussele who was married to still life artist Cecelia Muringer Schussele.

- Description
- Certificate of appreciation for work with the "Committee on the Restaurant of the Great Central Fair" containing a border of scenes and vignettes depicting the presence of the Sanitary Commission at the battlefront. Shows commission supply wagons arriving and depositing crates of goods at a campsite; soldiers assisting other soldiers in walking, receiving refreshments, and being transported by a gurney; and an unloaded crate of bottles of beverages, oranges, tins, and bandages. Also contains the seal of "The Great Central Fair for the U.S. Sanitary Commission." Seal depicts the female figure of Charity handing a glass to a soldier attending a wounded soldier., Not in Wainwright., Issued to Rebecca W. English on June 25, 1864. Signed by Jno. - Shows the troops of the 114th Regiment, Pennsylvania Volunteers, led by four drummers and four buglers marching past the old City Hall, Independence Hall, and Congress Hall on the 500 block of Chestnut Street. The commanders, wearing caps, long jackets, and pants, march in front and beside the men attired in their turbans, cropped jackets, and baggy pantaloons. Several spectators, including a girl hold a pail next to a man in an apron, line the street. - View showing the Civil War hospital, built in 1862 after the designs of Philadelphia architect John McArthur, Jr. between Stenton, Germantown, Springfield and Abington avenues opposite the Chestnut Hill track of the Reading Railroad (7900-8000 blocks Stenton Avenue). Hospital contains a central complex of administrative and utility buildings, and radiating hospital wards. A train approaches the station at which people wait opposite the hospital. Trees surround the complex. - United States Army Hospital, Philadelphia This is one of the largest army hospitals in the world it is capable of accommodating 3000 men, it has two dining rooms, each 775 feet long, the whole establishment covers twelve acres of ground, and is enclosed by a fence, 14 feet high, the surgeon in charge is Doctor Isaac J. Hays, the distinguished Arctic explorer, who was a former companion of the lamented Doctor Kane

- Bird’s eye view showing the Satterlee U. S. General Hospital, opened June 9th, 1862 at Forty-fourth Street and Baltimore Avenue in the farmland of West Philadelphia. A horse-drawn wagon, a man pushing a handcart of linens, and a line of pedestrians approach the entrance of the hospital complex that is guarded by a soldier. Within the complex, visitors stroll and a troop of soldiers drill in the central courtyards bordered by over twenty wards. Also shows a neighboring building, soldiers reclining near the fence of the complex, and a soldier on horseback. - Explosion and burning of the cartridge factory, cor. Tenth and Read [sic], March 2[9]th 1862
- Description
- Disaster scene showing the aftermath of the explosion of the factory of Professor Samuel Jackson located in South Philadelphia. Shows people fleeing, trapped, and engulfed in flames at the ruins of the burning factory. In the foreground, a man rushes to cover a man's body that has had its head and arm amputated; men throw buckets of water and blankets on women on fire; individuals carry the wounded; comfort the survivors; rush in with buckets; and hose the fire. Also shows a man looking in horror from a train car in the left of the image and debris flying in the air and lying on the ground. Over 15 people, including the son of the proprietor, perished in the explosion of the factory that was contracted to produce one and a half million experimental "solid water proof patent cartridges" during the Civil War. Jackson, a Philadelphia pyrotechnist and inventor, began the manufacture of fireworks in Philadelphia in 1837. He continued in pyrotechnics until 1887, when he began to manufacture danger signals for railroads.
