Title: Wright, Hunter & Co. S.W. cor. Ninth & Walnut Sts. Philadelphia
Description: Advertisement showing the five-story corner property tenanted by the plumbing and gas fitting establishment of William Wright, John C. Hunter, J.H. McFetrich, and Thomas Brown at 900 Walnut Street. Seventeen bays of windows extend the length of the property on Ninth Street. Two women and a young girl stand in front of an unidentified property adorned by a metal skeleton for an awning (left). One man drives a horse-drawn cart north on Ninth Street, while another unloads goods from a dray. Two gentlemen wearing long coats and top hats stand at the Walnut Street entrance to the plumbing store. One of them grasps the handle of a pump in the doorway. Chandeliers and other wares are visible through the large shop windows. Two white horses are hitched to a closed cab stopped in front of the entrance, and a horse-drawn omnibus is partially visible in the background. The name of the business appears prominently on the cornice, and on signboards facing both Walnut and Ninth Streets. Managed at this site beginning in 1855, the store name changed to John C. Title: Lippincott Mansion
Description: Exterior view of the Dundas-Lippincott mansion at the busy northeast corner of Broad and Walnut Streets, Philadelphia. Shows the mansion surrounded by a wall with wrought iron. Steps lead to ionic columns, which hold up the pediment over the front door. Several trees grow on either side of the house. Numerous pedestrians, including an African American boy, as well as a car, carriage, and trolley travel in front of and around the residence. Designed by Thomas U. Walter, the Dundas-Lippincott Mansion was built around 1838 for Philadelphia banker James Dundas on the old grounds of the amusement center Vauxhall Gardens. Nicknamed the "Yellow Mansion," due to its buff color, the residence was known for its impressive garden and as a place for lavish entertainment. Description: View showing the Walnut Street Theatre under construction at 827-833 Walnut Street (corner of Ninth and Walnut Streets). The theater, originally built as a circus in 1809, was altered to a theater in 1816, and remodeled from 1827-1828 after the designs of Philadelphia architect John Haviland. Other renovations were completed in 1852 by Hoxie & Button, in 1903 by Willis Gaylord Hale and in 1904 by Rush Anderson Plowman. Description: Depicts Krider's gun store at the northeast corner of 2nd and Walnut Streets, looking east at the south front and west flank. Includes a partial view of the sign for St. Alban's Hotel in the foreground, along with a sign advertising Shore Dinners at Bookbinder's Restaurant (125 Walnut Street). A cigar shop and Bookbinder's are visible in the background. A plaque is posted near the Second Street doorway of the gun shop, marking the site as the birthplace of John Drinker, the first white child born in Philadelphia. The brick building was constructed by John Drinker as a residence in 1751 and altered to a gun shop in 1826. John Krider purchased the shop in 1856. Description: Advertisement showing a southwest view of the three-story storefront, adorned with signage, on the 200 block of Walnut Street. In front of the store, a female patron reaches into a sack - one of several sacks, crates, and canisters displayed on a platform near the open doorway. Within the store, a couple stands near one of two rows of shelves of merchandise furnishing the establishment. On the second floor, large, open panel doors expose the room lined with hay. A barrel and crates, and boxes of tea and sacks stacked in the rear of the floor are visible. Several brooms are stored in front of the third floor windows. At the side of the building, two gentlemen converse near a side door and hand-cart across from a row of crates and barrels that are lined against the wall. Harris was active in the Sedgely Club and often attended and held card parties, teas, and luncheons noted in the local press. Harris spent her later years residing in Bryn Mawr where she died circa 1948.

When the city bought the square in 1816, the undeveloped portion north of Walnut Street had been enclosed by fencing and was used as a public green for community meetings and demonstrations. Description: Derived from a print created by J.C. Wild in 1832, this view looks west from the intersection of Third, Walnut and Dock Streets and depicts the Merchant's Exchange constructed 1832-33 after the designs of Philadelphia architect William Strickland for the Philadelphia Exchange Company. Includes street and pedestrian traffic concentrated near the business center and the City Railroad tracks. Many horse-drawn omnibuses, including the Spruce Street, Navy Yard, West Philadelphia and Fifth Street lines, arrive and depart. Men and women stand and converse in the streets or on the steps of the exchange.
