Title: Penn's landing at Essex House, Chester
Description: Book illustration showing the reception of the William Penn landing party arriving ashore at Upland, renamed Chester, from the ship "Welcome" in October 1682. A couple, Robert and Lydia Wade, walks from the Essex House, the residence of Wade, toward the party. Cows graze nearby. Also includes a partial view of Penn's ship. The residence and temporary home for Penn, was situated near the intersection of Chester Creek and the Delaware River. Description: Exterior view of the Graham House built for John Hoskins in 1688 on the southeast corner of Edgmont Avenue and Graham Street, Chester, Pennsylvania. Shows an oblique view of the two-story brick house with shuttered windows and three dormer windows protruding from the roof. Two sets of stairs lead to the front door, which is covered by a portico. A white picket fence surrounds the property. A sign hangs on the front of the house, "Graham House John Hoskins 1688." An African American man leans on the second-story windowsill with his left hand resting on his face and looks at the viewer. On Thursday, October 8th, in the afternoon and evening commencing at 2 and 7 o'clock, P.M. Come! all who are in favor of the supremacy of law, order and the Constitution, and who wish to avoid the anarchy and despotism which an atrocious rebellion would impose on the freemen of the United States. The following gentlemen will be present and address the meeting: Gov. Andrew G. Curtin, Gen. B.F. Bruce, of New York, Col. R.S. Mathews, of Baltimore, Col. Philip S. White, of Philadelphia, John W. Forney, Esq. Hon. John M. Broomall, " John Hickman, Wayne McVeagh, Esq. Morton McMichael, Esq. and other eminent speakers who will be sent by the State Central Committee.
