Title: Old Dunkard Church postcards
Description: Exterior views of front facade and side of stone church, showing roundel window, a large palladian window and entrance door flanked by a shallow portico. Also includes a view of the cemetery in the background., Contains 4 postcards printed in color and 8 printed in black and white., Also known as Church of the Brethren, founded by Alexander Mack in 1708 near Crefeldt in North Prussia. Persecution drove the congregation to Philadelphia in 1719 and in 1723 the first Dunkard or German Baptist Brethren Church was organized in Germantown. The congregation originally worshipped in a building erected by Christopher Sauer (4653 Main Street) and then in a house secured by Peter Pettikoffer, who begged for the money to erect the building. Called Beggar's Town or Bettel Hausen. Founded as Mount Airy Seminary (later Mount Airy College or Collegiate Institute) in 1807, the school served as a military academy 1826-1835 under the superintendence of Augustus L. Roumfort. The building is located on the corner of Main Street and Church Lane and has two floors above the shop on the first floor. Signage is visible on the side and partially on the front of the building and reads "C.L. Eberle." A canvas sign hangs across the sidewalk and reads "Miss Kate Cotton Millinery." A man stands on the sidewalk in front of the store next to a tall tree growing in a planter on the sidewalk. Eberle purchased this drug store from Abraham Rex in 1859. Description: Glass negative showing Germantown Avenue, a brick road with trolley tracks running down the center lined with sidewalks, trees, and telephone poles leading up to Wyck, home of Jane Haines. A group of men stands next to a pile of bricks on the right side of the street. A wooden fence stands behind the sidewalk of the left side. Wyck is visible among tree branches beyond the fence. Also called the Haines House, the earliest owner of this property was Hans Millan, who immigrated to the United States in 1689. The house passed through marriage into the Johnson, Wistar, and Haines families. Reuben Haines III named the house Wyck after a mansion in England owned by the non-relative Richard Haines. In 1824, he hired Philadelphia architect William Strickland to alter the interior of the house. Haines’s daughter Jane Reuben Haines, the founder of the first horticultural school for women, the Pennsylvania School of Horticulture for Women, lived in the house until 1911. The engine worked by both gathering water from wells and propeling water onto fires. It was in use up until 1822, when the Fellowship Fire Company deemed it too antiquated for use.
