- Print of Franklin's anti-Stamp Act cartoon, originally issued on card stock and distributed to members of Parliament prior to debate on the repeal, depicting a dismembered Britannia to represent the alienation of the American colonies as a consequence of non-repeal. Shows Britannia, fallen of and resting against the globe of the world, her limbs inscribed with the names of the colonies strewn around her, her shield fallen beside her, and her lance, speared through her "New England" leg, pointed at her chest (allusion to the New England riots). She sits upon a barren land, near a withered English oak, a dropped olive branch, and British ships marked for sale by brooms attached to their masts. A sash inscribed in Latin, "Penny for Bellisario" (Roman military hero of Emperor Justinian accused of treason and reduced to beggary), lies across her chest., Manuscript note by DuSimitiere on recto: North America November the first MDCCLXV. - Description
- Civil War cartoon satirizing the awkward foreign relations between the United States and Great Britain caused by the royal proclamation of neutrality in 1861. The Queen issued the proclamation, which recognized the seceded states as having belligerent rights, in response to the Union blockades of Southern ports and its effect on international maritime trade and privateering. Consequently, the United States feared that Great Britain had acknowledged the Confederacy as an independent government. Shows John Bull and "Pat" on a dock discussing the sailor's enlistment in the Navy. Bull, the royal proclamation under his arm, warns the American that should he enlist with "either of the Belligerents" he would not be protected by Britain if taken as a pirate. "Pat" responds he does not want his protection and that the "stars and stripes" for which he fights will protect him. - Racist cartoon reflecting the Northern fear that Britain's economic ties with Southern cotton growers would cause the British government to relinquish its abolitionist stance in order to support the Confederacy. Depicts a plump John Bull, representing Great Britain, centered between a kneeling enslaved African American man and a bale of cotton in a storage shed. Bull touches the hair of the African American man with his right hand and holds a piece of the cotton from the bale in the other. He declares, "it is certain that Cotton is more useful to me than Wool!!" In the left background, two African American men stand and cry. - Memorial print published after the assassination of Abraham Lincoln in April 1865 containing portraits, allegorical figures, vignettes, and pictorial details. Depicts Columbia, depicted as a white woman and attired in classical garb and a Phrygian cap, crowning a bust-length portrait of George Washington (left) and bust-length portrait of Lincoln (right) with laurel wreaths. Flagpole finials with flags appear as wings behind her. Documents, partially rolled, associated with Washington and Lincoln, the "Declaration of Independence 1776" and the "Emancipation Proclamation 1863," appear below the portraits of the presidents. Each president's life dates are inscribed on the edge. On the left are vignettes with scenes from the Revolution depicting the Boston Tea Party "Dec. 18th 1773"; the signing of the Declaration of Independence "July, 1776"; and the British surrender at Yorktown "Octr. 19, 1781." On the right, are vignette scenes of the Civil War depicting the bombardment of Fort Sumter "April 14th, 1861"; an encounter between an ironclad and two wooden ships ("Progress"), and Lincoln's triumphant arrival via coach with an African American driver in Richmond "6th April 1861." Smith, known as an eccentric, never married and traveled widely from the mid to late 19th century. Between 1859 and 1886, she resided in Washington, D.C (1859-1861) and traveled to Europe (1860-1870; 1874-1876; 1880-1886), including the British Isles, Rome, Venice, Paris and St. Petersburg. She was also an autograph collector, author, poet, and socialite. Smith died and was buried in London in November 1886. Her estate was valued at over $30,000 and she left several bequests, including to the Library Company, Historical Society of Pennsylvania, and friends throughout the East coast of the United States, Europe, and Russia.

- Racist political cartoon satirizing the fictitious "Nigger Emperor" of Nicaragua during the "Prometheus-Express" incident of November 1851, which threatened the Clayton-Bulwer Treaty of 1850 between the United States and Britain to abstain from attempting dominion of Central America. Depicts the Emperor as a Black man, partially undressed, attired in a military uniform with epaulettes, a black plumed hat, a sword on his waistband, and black boots. He sits atop a barrel labeled “Jamaica Rum.” He has one boot off that exposes his sock. His trousers are off and draped over his right arm. He smiles with a cigar in his mouth and carries a bottle labeled “Brandy” in his left hand. He looks towards Frederick Chatfield, the United Kingdom’s consul in Central America from 1834 to 1852, standing in the right. However, when the ship arrived in New York he took his case to the U.S. government with the U.S. wanting Britain to withdraw from Central America. In early 1852, the Nicaraguan government sought to assert its authority over the Miskito kingdom. He hands a rifle to a Costa Rican man, attired in a straw hat, poncho, and torn and worn pants, who carries a dagger in his right hand and declares, "Death to Los Americanos!" She married Philadelphia wool merchant Yeamans Moon Gillingham (1817-1885) in 1844 and relocated with him to Moorestown, N.J. in 1850 following his retirement. The couple had a son Aubrey Howard Gillingham (1850-1885). In 1855 the family was recommended by the Green Street Meeting for the Eversham Monthly Meeting, N.J. At her death, Gillingham was a member of the Moorestown Monthly Meeting. Among her bequests were funds to endow beds at the Philadelphia Orthopedic Hospital and Dispensary and the Women’s Hospital.

First nine cards show the British "surly lion" giving a "generous roar," (i.e., the recognition by Great Britain of the Confederacy); which "temporarily astonishes" the "Gallic Cock"; who eventually overpowers the lion; who later weeps "is he not a bird and brother" for a crow, (i.e. an enslaved person of the South) at Exeter Hall; "which he forgets in the embrace of the "Belligerent Wolf of the C.S.A." while stepping on the crow; which leads to his "arming of the wolf"; while the Mexican vulture is garroted by the Gallic cock (i.e., French intervention in Mexico); causing the lion to protect his rams with the introduction of the "Swamp Angel" and Greek fire, (i.e. the bombing of Charleston) by the American eagle; which causes the "grand combat" between the eagle and the wolf. - Collection containing primarily engravings, watercolors, and drawings executed by English-born artist and engraver William Birch and his descendants between the 18th and later 19th century. Several of the graphic materials are by William Birch and represent engraved work he completed in Britain before 1794 and following his immigration to the United States that same year. His British work includes plates from his unpublished satiric volume “The Busy World, or London Dissected ...” (ca. 1792-ca. 1793) showing a charlatan at work, a fight between Richard Humphreys and Daniel Mendoza, a May Day procession, and rag dealers (P.2016.50.28-33); loose plates from his book of British landscapes “Les Delices de la Grande Bretagne” (1791) (P.2016.50.34, 36, 42); the rural and scenic “The Porcupine Inn Yard Rushmore Hill” (p.2016.50.38); the disaster print “The Great Fire of London in the Year 1666” (P.2016.50.55); and portraits of the poetical character Secander (P.2016.50.40) and his mentor “Sir Joshua Reynolds” (P.2016.50.22). His American work includes variant editions of plates from his “Views of Philadelphia” originally published as a series 1798-1800 (P.2016.62.21-37); variant editions of plates from his “Country Seats” originally published in 1808 (P.2016.62.38-45a); and the 1800 commemorative portrait “George Washington. Birch was also one of the most important landscape artists in America’s Federal period. He engraved and published the first viewbook of an American city, "The City of Philadelphia in the Year… 1800" and the respected "The Country Seats of the United States of North America" in 1804. His son Thomas Birch (1779-1851) assisted him in the drawing and engraving of his viewbooks. He became a respected artist in his own right and specialized in marine paintings.

- Series of three Civil War satires containing captioned vignettes utilizing shadow figures to cynically depict the threat of a European intervention; the prowess of the military; and the exploitation of war news. Plate 1 contains two scenes foreshadowing possible British, French, and Prussian invasions. Shows Queen Victoria, on the shore of Britain, accompanied by demons and restraining the British lion while she threatens Columbia, "I will sink your ships and burn your factories they are a perfect nuisance." Columbia, atop a globe flanked by warships, holding an American flag and shield, and with a man at her feet thumbing his nose at Britain, replies, "You don't say so!! Very glad to see you." Second scene shows Emperor Napoleon III, and probably, Prussian commander Otto Von Bismarck conversing in a parlor in front of framed paintings of Napoleon I in exile and Frederick the Great commanding his army. Bismark points to the Napoleon painting and comments "General. St. Helena is not forgotten." Plate 2 includes "Good Bye to the Lager" showing male civilians and a soldier at a saloon; the disorganized and distracted "Jeff. Davis' Body Guard"; soldiers chasing, bayoneting; and roasting pigs for "Pig duty in the Sacred Soil"; and "Rather moist" showing a military caravan crossing a river. Plate 3 includes "Somerset Polka (Quick Step)" depicting the death and chaos of a military battle; newsboys hawking the "Evening Bulletin. Capture of Fort Pulsing" to a crowd of eager pedestrians; a soldier, "One of the Chivalry in excitement," stretching from a nap; overweight and doddering soldiers "Going to play the Yankee Doodle down South"; an officer in a huff demanding "Why didn't you call when you saw me coming?" to a lieutenant who responds, "Senty.
