Title: Costume guerriers Japonais
Description: Interior view of the Japanese display, including samurai armor, at the Exposition Universelle in Paris. Shows a mannequin attired in Japanese samurai armor, carrying a bow, and mounted on a horse. In the left is another mannequin attired in samurai armor stands and holding a spear. A sign reading "Couvernement Du Taichiou De Satsousma" rests at the foot of the display. In the right is a norimono, a Japanese palanquin or litter. Nets hang down from the ceiling. In the left background is a partial view of more objects, including another mannequin. The Exposition, held April 1-November 3, 1867, celebrated the technological and economic progress of the Second French Empire, as well as originated the classification system followed by proceeding international exhibitions. Description: Trade card promoting druggist C.C. Hughes in the style of trompe l'oeil depicting a landscape with ships and a vignette portrait of a Japanese woman portrayed in caricature. Shows a landscape view with people standing on a path leading to a pagoda on a cliff. In the right, ships sail on the water. In the background are mountains. In the left, shows the Japanese woman wearing her hair up and decorated with Kanzashi hair ornaments and attired in gold hoop earrings; a yellow, patterned kimono with red trim; and a black obi. Description: Collection of graphic materials documenting world's fairs of the latter 19th and early 20th centuries, predominantly the Centennial Exhibition of 1876 (Philadelphia) and Exposition Universelle de 1867 à Paris. Includes stereographs, trade cards, collecting cards, lantern slides, and souvenirs. Graphics also depict the Great Exhibition of 1851; New York Exhibition of the Industry of All Nations (1853-1854); the Exposition Universelle de 1867 a Paris; the Paris Universal Exposition of 1878; the Chicago World's Fair of 1893; the Pan American Exposition of 1901 (Buffalo, N.Y.); the Louisiana Purchase Exposition of 1904 (St. Louis, Mo.); and the Sesqui-Centennial International Exposition of 1926 (Philadelphia). Views show panoramas of the exhibition grounds and exteriors and interiors of exhibition buildings, including displays showing the wares and products of specific companies and countries, particularly porcelain and terra cotta; art, predominantly sculpture; and dioramas representing the social life and customs of different nations (Morocco, Japan, Sweden, and South America). Several trade cards issued during the Chicago World's Fair advertising the Enterprise Manufacturing Company of Penn'a. also contain anecdotal, caricatured scenes portraying prominent historical figures, including Abraham Lincoln, Horace Greeley, and Benjamin Franklin.
