Description: Print trimmed and lacking caption., Poulson inscription on recto: Dec. 1848 No. 327 1/2 Market Street., Select link below for a digital image., Advertisement depicting the three-and-a-half-story building containing the hotel and tavern operated by John Thompson at 329 Market Street and Robert Denny's saddles and harness store at 327 1/2 Market Street. Harnesses and other horse paraphernalia hang from the shop's display window and entranceways, including a stable entrance marked, "Entertainment for Horses." In front of the building, a man with his horse enters the marked entrance; a clerk from Denny's converses with a customer by a stack of trunks; and other horses rest nearby and in front of the adjacent hardware store, including one attached to a sulky attended by an African American man. Hotel guests stand near the second floor windows and enter the hotel entrance. The hotel, tavern, and harness and saddle store resided together at the site only for the year 1848 to 1849.

Title: Wm. H. Richardson steam manufactory
Description: Advertisement showing the heavily adorned storefront and manufactory of the umbrella and parasol business at 104 High Street, i.e., the 300 block of Market Street. Signage with the name of the proprietor and type of merchandise covers the entrance. Building adornments also include the figure of Liberty, an American eagle, and the building number. Through the open entranceway, a female clerk is visible showing an umbrella to a male patron as a female patron mills in the background. In the display window, parasols hang above an empty display stand. Richardson is listed at 104 High (later Market) Street from 1843 to 1852., Date from Poulson inscription on recto: Market Street. Description: Advertisement showing the 4-story ornamented sandstone storefronts completed in 1853 after the designs of Gustav Runge at 145, 147, 149 (i.e., 300 block) Market Street. Businesses include Maddock Raymond & Co., watches & jewelry, Spring Oaks & Co., dry goods (145); M. L. Hallowell & Co., importers & jobbers in silk goods, Guillou Walton & Co., hosiery & linen goods (147, later 333); and De Courcey Lafourcade & Co., importers of mens wear and cloth warehouse. Also shows street and pedestrian traffic. An older gentleman walks near two women peering into the windows of Lafourcade as a man stands at the entrance of Hallowell. In the street, a horse-drawn dray races past two laborers loading crates onto three drays parked in front of Hallowell & Co. Nearby, a man carrying a wood pole over his shoulder rushes behind two dogs chasing one another past a man carrying a satchel on his back. Also contains two female allegorical figures bordering the image in the upper corners. Description: Trimmed advertisement showing the five-story storefronts marked with pre-consolidation addresses. Includes S. F. Nidelet, silk store (124 Market); Sleeper & Brothers, umbrellas and parasols (126 Market); Richie & Ennis, umbrella and parasol manufactory and Caleb F. Clarke & Co., clothing store (128 Market). Signage adorns the buildings and merchandise displays are visible in the windows and doorways of the businesses. A gentleman stands within the clothing store and umbrellas hang from the windows of Richie & Ennis. Also shows the Fourth Street side of the corner building. Crates line the wall of the building and signage for the business tenating the cellar of 128 Market, J. Roberts Jones, rugs and blinds, is visible. Title: Stone Prison at Philadelphia, 1728
Description: Reversed view set during the colonial era showing the High Street Prison built circa 1723 at Third and High (Market) streets. The site included a debtor's jail (High Street side) and workhouse (Third Street side) joined together by a wall that formed part of a yard enclosure. Men in colonial attire walk in front of the jail and past the wall to the workhouse. A horse stands between two small outbuildings in the right of the image. Title: Jacob Riegel & Co., importers and jobbers of dry goods. No. 333 Market, & Nos. 25 & 27 North 4th Street, Philadelphia
Description: Exterior view of the multi-story storefront at 333 Market Street of the dry goods store originally established in 1832 as Siegers & Vogel. Patrons stand in the doorway of the building, while pedestrians converse and a white man and woman couple passes by on the sidewalk in front of the entrance. Laborers load and unload horse-drawn drays stationed nearby across from street traffic, including a Pennsylvania Central R.R. Depot street car, a racing Adams Express Co. wagon transporting crates, and an African American delivery man pushing a handcart carrying boxes. Also shows partial views of adjacent buildings. Jacob Riegel operated Jacob Riegel & Co. from 1866 until his death in 1880. Description: View looking east from above Third and High (Market) streets showing the High Street Prison built circa 1723 and the nearby old market stalls during the colonial era. Two African American men are depicted in a stockade and attached to a whipping post near the jail. The man attached to the whipping post is attired in a white cloth that is tied around his waist.
