Description: Series of progress photographs of the construction of the Tower of Light and "Progress on Lagoon" west of Broad Street and near Packer Street. Photographs depict the construction of the tower from its foundation to completion and the early stages of development of the lagoon from muddy marshland. Images show construction workers, including African Americans; construction equipment and supplies; automobiles and horse-drawn wagons; and foot traffic, including spectators. Lagoon photographs also show neighboring exhibition buildings under construction. Series also contains a view of the completed exhibition grounds. In the foreground, cars and visitors travel past the "Kodak" building. Title: T. I. Dyre, Jr. bell & brass founder, corner of Washington & Church Streets, Philadelphia
Description: Advertisement showing the foundry complex in South Philadelphia. Includes the "Black Lead Crucible Manufactory," "Brass & Bell Foundry," an office-like building, and a workshop with a stack spewing smoke. A gentleman enters the office as a laborer pushes a dray on the sidewalk toward an alley out of which a drayman leads his horse-drawn vehicle transporting a large bell. In the street, a crowded "Gray's Ferry" double-decker omnibus travels alongside a dog barking at the horses. At the rear of the street car, a man attempts to jump aboard. Also shows a couple standing at an opposite street corner, near the open doorway of possibly a grocery store, and surrounding buildings. Title: Point Breeze Park, schottisch
Description: Cover illustration is a lithograph, tinted with two stones, showing several spectators at a trotting race at the park on the Penrose Ferry Bridge Road near Point Breeze. In the right, several men, in top hats, stand in the judge's stand while male and female club members mob the piazzas of the two-story main clubhouse as the two trotters pulling sulkies race past on the course. A few spectators stand on the grounds and landscaped paths. Also shows a second smaller clubhouse building. The park, established in 1855 by the Point Breeze Park Association of sportsmen, promoted trotting races as agricultural exhibitions to circumvent an 1817 city ban of horse racing. Title: Pascal Iron Works, Morris Tasker & Morris
Description: Advertisement for the iron works complex originally built in 1836 on Fifth Street below Franklin Street, i.e., Tasker Street (1700 block). Laborers work among machinery parts, including piles of cylinders and wheels, in the courtyard of the works containing several buildings. One worker pushes a handcart. Morris, Tasker, and Morris was founded by Stephen Morris in 1821 as a stove and grate manufactory. In the late 1820's, Henry Morris and Thomas Tasker joined the firm which was renamed S.P. Morris & Co. Circa 1836 the firm was renamed Morris, Tasker, & Morris when Wistar Morris assumed the position of Stephen Morris and the firm began to manufacture gas pipes. In 1856, the firm was renamed Morris, Tasker & Co. Title: Explosion and burning of the cartridge factory, cor. Tenth and Read [sic], March 2[9]th 1862
Description: Disaster scene showing the aftermath of the explosion of the factory of Professor Samuel Jackson located in South Philadelphia. Shows people fleeing, trapped, and engulfed in flames at the ruins of the burning factory. In the foreground, a man rushes to cover a man's body that has had its head and arm amputated; men throw buckets of water and blankets on women on fire; individuals carry the wounded; comfort the survivors; rush in with buckets; and hose the fire. Also shows a man looking in horror from a train car in the left of the image and debris flying in the air and lying on the ground. Over 15 people, including the son of the proprietor, perished in the explosion of the factory that was contracted to produce one and a half million experimental "solid water proof patent cartridges" during the Civil War. Jackson, a Philadelphia pyrotechnist and inventor, began the manufacture of fireworks in Philadelphia in 1837. He continued in pyrotechnics until 1887, when he began to manufacture danger signals for railroads.
