Title: Transportation of the dead! Staunton Transportation Company's transportation case, preserves the body in a natural and perfect condition as when placed in it, for any distance or length of time, in any weather. It is light, durable, tastefully finished, and so arranged as to readily expose the face of the corpse for inspection. The corpse requires no preparation, as by embalming, cutting or poisoning; but all arrangements for the funeral can be made and held a church or home, as though the subject had died on the day of arrival at home. The transportation cases are rented only to carry bodies home and returned by express at the company's expense. ... Coffins, boxes, &c., furnished for those desiring to take up friends, (who are buried,) for removal, together with teams, exhumers and guides who have surveyed the whole battle-fields of the Potomac Army. Description: Commemorative print depicting the participation of African American troops in the only major battle fought in Florida during the Civil War. Shows an African American regiment from the 8th U.S. Colored Infantry advancing against Confederate troops hunkered down behind fortifications in the left distance. The troop is led by a white officer on horseback. Behind a single cannon, the first line of men has their guns drawn and aimed. Two rows behind is the African American flag bearer. He holds an American flag with a gold streamer reading "8 U.S. Inf[antry]." Two rows of African American soldiers advance from behind him. Dead soldiers and two dead horses lie to the advancing troop's left. A white soldier uses one of the dead horses as a shield while firing. The Battle of Olustee was fought on February 20, 1864 in Baker County near Olustee Station on the Florida, Atlantic, and Gulf Central Railroad. Union troops, led by Brigadier General Truman Seymour, met reinforced Confederate troops under the command of General Joseph Finnegan when on an expedition to capture Florida. Union troops entered the battle piecemeal, were barraged, and were forced to retreat to Jacksonville. Reserve forces from the Massachusetts 54th and the 35th United States Colored Troops provided cover. Union forces never fought Confederate forces from behind fortifications, nor in a clearing as portrayed in the Kurz & Allison print. Description: Certificate containing a view showing a bustling street scene around the hospital situated opposite the Philadelphia, Wilmington, and Baltimore Railroad depot at the corner of Broad Street and Washington Avenue. On the sidewalk, soldiers converse, men and women pedestrians stroll, and a female peddler and vendor sell their goods and wares, the latter patronized by Zouaves. In the street, medical personnel and doctors accompany injured soldiers, by stretcher, foot, and on crutches toward the hospital. Men, women, and children walk, converse, and greet each other, and horse-drawn carriages, including possibly an ambulance, travel past and stop near the hospital. Children include a boy carrying a basket and two attempting to help a man with his valise. Also shows surrounding buildings in the background. Description: Print containing a montage of 11 exterior and interior views of the volunteer hospital opened September 5, 1862 opposite the Philadelphia, Wilmington, and Baltimore Railroad depot. Central view shows a bustling street scene outside of the hospital.
