Title: De Fleury at Stony Point Medal
Description: Reads, "Virtutis Et Audaclae Monum. Et Praemium" and "D. De Fleury Equitt Gallo Primo Super Muros Resp. Americ D.D." Translation: "A memorial and reward for bravery and boldness—The American Republic presented this award to M. de Fleury, a French officer, who as the first scaled the walls." Mars is depicted on the ruin of the fort treading on the British flag with his sword raised. Reverse reads, "Aggeres Paludes Hostes Victi” “STONY PT EXPUGN xv Jul MDCCLXXIX." Translation: "Fortifications, marshes, and the enemy overcome—Stony Point taken by assault, July 15th, 1779." Depicts the fort of Stony Point and the enemy’s vessels on the river below it., On July 26, 1779, Congress decided to reward Lieutenant Colonel Fleury for bravery in the attack of the fort at Stony Point. Description: Trade card issued during the Columbian Exposition of 1893 advertising Enterprise Mf'g Co. of Pa. "Enterprise Cork Pullers." Contains an anachronistic scene including a caricaturized depiction of John Adams, John Jay, and Benjamin Franklin. Depicts the statesmen near a black servant using an Enterprise cork puller clamped to a table to open a bottle. Adams holds the "Treaty of Peace" and a glass. Description: Depiction of the First Troop Philadelphia City Cavalry’s flag from 1774. Shows the flag with fringed edges on a spiked flagpole adorned with two tassels and held open by a rope from its upper right corner tied to a tree in the right. In the top left of the flag are thirteen stripes representing the colonies. In the center, flanking a shield illustrated with thirteen ropes tied into a Gordian Knot are allegorical figures representing Liberty and Fame. Liberty, depicted as a barefooted Native American figure attired in a headdress, feather skirt, and with a quiver of arrows on their back, carries a bow and a liberty cap on a pole. Title: Meschianza Mirror
Description: This richly decorated frame has carved and gilded moldings with pendants of leaves, blossoms, and fruit. Lettered around the frame in gilt reads, “Mischianza-1778. / This mirror was in the ballroom of the Wharton House, Philadelphia at the above date & on the occasion of above fête./ General Meredith Read’s André relics.” The Meschianza ended with a ball, which took place in an elaborate canvas tent. Title: The dawn of liberty General Gage said "The very children here draw on a love of liberty with the air they breathe. You may go my brave boys, and be assured if my troops trouble you again they shall be punished."
Description: Historical print based on lore depicting a 1774 meeting in Boston between British Massachusetts Royal Governor General Thomas Gage and a "committee" of boys about British troops infringing their rights by destroying their snow hills and skating ice when unprovoked. Depicts the rotund Gage seated in a palatial drawing room decorated with an ornate rug; damask-style, blue wallpaper; red drapery; a large painted portrait of King George III; a book case; and a fireplace with a mantle adorned with a gold sculpture of the British lion. Gage, in uniform, sits in an arm chair near two of his officers, in uniform. One is seated at a table, covered in a cloth with an ornate design and the other stands next to him. A ledger and sheets of paper rest on the table. A delegation of boys, in long jackets, pantaloons, and tri-corn hats, enters the room through an open door. The lead boy extends his hand toward Gage as the others look at the room, each other, and the royal governor. An African American male servant, attired in a blue jacket and pantaloons and depicted with simian-like features, tends to a fire in the fireplace behind Gage. Title: Tobias Gilmore House, Raynham, 1781-1918. "Toby" Gilmore, born in Africa, was a patriot of the American Revolution
Description: Souvenir card depicting the second Raynham, Ma. residence of Black Revolutionary War soldier Shibodee Turry Wurry also known as Tobias Gilmore. Shows the two-story wooden residence with portico, hipped roof, and chimney and grassy, front grounds. Trees and shrubbery line and surround the house. Wurry born in West Africa, was kidnapped and enslaved in 1757. Captain John Gilmore of Rayham, Ma. became his enslaver and renamed Wurry, Tobias Gilmore. Gilmore enlisted in military service in 1776, during the American Revolution, to gain his freedom. In December 1781, Gilmore was discharged from service, including serving at the Battle of Fort Ticonderoga. He returned to Rayham a free man. In 1784, he purchased land in Rayham and built his first home. He built his second home circa 1800. Description: This mortar was sent by Isaac J. Wister to the Library Company in 1864. His accompanying letter [7431.F.47] reads: Head Quarters, U. S. Army Forces, Yorktown Va., February 16, 1864. To the President and Managers of the Library Company of Philadelphia. Gentlemen, I have the honor to present to the Library Company, one thirteen inch mortar shell, just examined by a fatigue party from the terreplein of old Fort Yorktown - which from its position must have been fired from the right batteries of Gen'l Washington's second parallel during the siege by the Allies in October, 1781. Description: Print commemorating the surrender in 1781 of British General Cornwallis at Yorktown depicting the watchman's purported moonlit announcement of the event on October 22nd at the Philadelphia residence of Thomas McKean, the president of Congress. Near the "Geo. Washington" tavern, the white watchman, one hand raised, a lantern in the other, his mouth open and with a few teeth missing, cries the news to the crowd of men, women, and children surrounding him and McKean. Depicts Columbia, depicted as a white woman and attired in classical garb and a Phrygian cap, crowning a bust-length portrait of George Washington (left) and bust-length portrait of Lincoln (right) with laurel wreaths. Flagpole finials with flags appear as wings behind her. Documents, partially rolled, associated with Washington and Lincoln, the "Declaration of Independence 1776" and the "Emancipation Proclamation 1863," appear below the portraits of the presidents. Each president's life dates are inscribed on the edge. Description: Print of Franklin's anti-Stamp Act cartoon, originally issued on card stock and distributed to members of Parliament prior to debate on the repeal, depicting a dismembered Britannia to represent the alienation of the American colonies as a consequence of non-repeal. Shows Britannia, fallen of and resting against the globe of the world, her limbs inscribed with the names of the colonies strewn around her, her shield fallen beside her, and her lance, speared through her "New England" leg, pointed at her chest (allusion to the New England riots). The City of Philadelphia purchased the property from the Williams family in 1869. On behalf of the city, the Philadelphia Museum of Art restored the house in 1926., The Johnson House was built 1765-1768 by master builder Jacob Knor at 6306 Germantown Avenue, Philadelphia, PA.
