Title: Willow Grove Park postcards
Description: Contains views of Willow Grove Park, a trolley amusement park located in the Philadelphia suburb of Willow Grove in Montgomery County. Images document buildings, grounds and attractions at the park including night and day time views of the lighted or "electric rainbow" fountain; the music pavilion, a open air theater which served as performance space for summer concert series featuring John Philip Sousa and others; the artificial lakes which were used for boating; popular rides including the Mountain Scenic Railway, the Airships (also known as the Captive Flying Machine), the Coal Mine (a roller coaster), and Venice (a gondola ride); the midway; the lake side pavilion which also served as a soda fountain; the casino; and boat landing. Also contains bird's eye views; views of the grounds and picnic areas; the entranceway; the cafe; a natural spring; and the Women's Building. Two postcards contain group portraits of Sousa's band and Victor Herbert's Orchestra., Postcards issued by a variety of different publishers with the greatest number (over thirty cards each) issued by J.M. Canfield and W.N. Jennings, a Philadelphia photographer. Includes part of two series Philadelphia Post Card Company, no. 1001-1012 and Illustrated Post Card Company, no. Description: Collection of pencil drawings published in Section III of Historic Philadelphia (Philadelphia: The Public Ledger Company, 1922). Depicts Colkenny, the Elizabethan-style estate of Acme Tea founder Thomas P. Hunter (built 1909 after the designs of Horace Trumbauer, Haverford, Pa); the Commercial Museum, opened in 1897 as a museum promoting manufacturing and international commerce (34th and South Streets); Lindenhurst, the French classical-style estate of department store pioneer John Wanamaker (Jenkintown, Pa., rebuilt ca. 1911); garden-elevation view of Penhurst, the Elizabethan-style estate of Pencoyd Iron Works owner Percival Roberts, Jr. (built 1902 after the designs of Peabody & Stearns, Narbeth, Pa.); Widener Memorial Industrial Training School opened about 1905 to provide home and medical care and manual training for children with disabilities (founded by P. A. B. Widener, built after the designs of Horace Trumbauer, 5400 North Broad Street); and the Willow Grove Park amphitheater. Majority of the views include personages on estate grounds or as street pedestrians, as well as automobiles on driveways or as street traffic and street lights. Lindenhurst view also shows a pond with swans, a foot bridge, and pavilion. Bailey studied at the Pennsylvania Museum School of Art and Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. He was a member of the Society of Illustrators and early in his career (1892-1901) worked as a staff artist for the Philadelphia Times and Boston Herald. His later career focused on naval works commissioned by the U.S. Government during World War I, as well as an artist’s tour in Europe and lithographic studies of New York skyscrapers during the 1920s., Forms part of the David Doret and Linda G. Title: Bits of nature and some art products, in Fairmount Park, at Philadelphia, Penna
Description: Volume of compiled prints and drawings by lithographer, etcher, and artist Augustus Kollner primarily depicting landscapes of Fairmount Park and originally published in his "Bits of Nature ...," one of four volumes in his 1878 series of small folio pictures. Also contains views of Philadelphia and Bucks and Montgomery counties. Several of the prints also show park and riverscape; residences and estates; animals, including canal mules, horses, cows, and dogs; park visitors, including an African American family, children, and persons on foot and on horseback; steamboats, rowboats, and other vessels on the Schuylkill River; and rock formations. Other views show wharf workers at lunch and a cliff-side residence at North Twenty-Seventh Street near the park., Mount Pleasant Mansion was built 1761-1765 for Captain John Macpherson after the designs of Thomas Nevil in Fairmount Park, Philadelphia, Pa. Macpherson, a privateer during the Seven Years’ War, purchased the estate with profits from these operations. Free white and Black laborers, indentured servants, and at least four enslaved people of African descent, whose names are unknown, worked on the plantation. In 1779, General Benedict Arnold purchased Mount Pleasant for his wife Peggy Shippen, but they never occupied the house. In 1792, General Jonathan Williams purchased the mansion. The City of Philadelphia purchased the property from the Williams family in 1869. On behalf of the city, the Philadelphia Museum of Art restored the house in 1926., Titles include Thos.
