Title: Jeff . Davis in prison
Description: Anti-Davis cartoon invoking the travesties at Confederate war prisons to satirize the incarcerated former Confederate president as a pompous, sniveling ingrate. Shows Davis, attired in a suit, and his feet shackled, in his cell, in front of a table containing his modest meal and complaining to the prison doctor. He bemoans his being unaccustomed to such living and that "you must order some more healthy food, or I shall starve to death." The doctor responds it is "good healthy food, such as our soldiers are fed on" and that their recent achievements prove it is "tolerably healthy." In the left, an older African American man cook, portrayed in racist caricature, announces in the vernacular "Massa Jeff! de dinner is ready." Two Union soldiers retort and reply "It's unhealthy is it! You didn't think that a pint of cornmeal was unhealthy when we were at Andersonville." Title: Fairbank's rock cordials, positive cure for all lung disorders
Description: Trade card promoting Fisher and Fairbanks' patent medicine Fairbanks' Rock Cordials and depicting a racist caricature of an African American man chef in the galley of ship. Shows the man portrayed with exaggerated features and attired in a white chef's hat; a white shirt with the sleeves rolled up to his elbows; a red vest with gold buttons; a white apron; blue pants; and black shoes. He stands holding a spoon in his right hand and with his left hand holds a bowl that is filled with an unidentifiable pink food over a barrel that is being used as a table. He smiles and looks to a blond-haired white girl in the right attired in a pink hat; a black choker; a red dress; a white pinafore; white stockings with red stripes; and black shoes. She carries a doll costumed in a matching outfit and leans to look at the chef mixing. In the foreground on the floor are a pan, a pot with a bowl on top of it, and a spoon. Description: Racist trade card promoting King Cereal Manufacturing Company and depicting a caricature of an African American woman domestic serving pancakes to a white couple while an African American man cook smiles in the kitchen. Shows the African American woman domestic, attired in a red dress, a white apron, and a white bonnet, holding her apron up in her hands while looking at the viewer and winking her eye. In the right, a brown-haired, white man with a mustache attired in a black suit, a white collared shirt, and black shoes and a white woman with brown hair in a bun and attired in a blue dress, sit in wooden chairs at a table covered with a white tablecloth. The white woman looks at the viewer as she wipes her mouth with a white napkin. On the table is a plate of pancakes, a coffee pot, glasses, and a condiment tray with various bottles.
