On a Philadelphia road in front of a small home with an open picket fence and a visitor arriving on horseback, a raggedly dressed dark skinned traveler with buck teeth, possibly an Irishman or African American, asks a rotund Quaker man and his attractive prim and proper daughter, "I say, this isn't the road to Philadelphy, honey, is it?" The father responds indignantly to the "Friend," that he is not only asking a question, but also telling a lie, and of course it is the road.

Description: Copyrighted by J.T. Bowen., Issued as plate 14 in Views of Philadelphia, and Its Vicinity (Philadelphia: Published by J.C. Wild & J.B. Chevalier, Lithographers, 72 Dock Street, 1838). The lithographic stones for the views were acquired by John T. Bowen and reissued in 1838 and in 1848 with hand coloring., Snyder, Martin. "J.C. Wild and His Philadelphia Views," Pennsylvania Magazine of History and Biography (January 1953, Vol. LXXXVII), p. 32-53., Select link below for a digital image., View of the active business-lined street containing the "New Jersey" Market terminus, named after its central location to the ferries of New Jersey, the city's main provider of farm produce. Several marketers and pedestrians, including African Americans, stroll the streets, sidewalks, and under the market shed designed with cupola and clock. Peddlers sell their goods from carts on Front Street. Built in 1822, the market operated until the abolition of street markets in 1859.

Title: Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church, Philada. [graphic] : Founded in 1794 by the Revd. Richard Allen, Bishop of the first African Methodist Episcopal Church in the United States. Rebuilt in 1805. / Drawn on Stone by W.L. Breton.
Description: Kennedy and Lucas, operated by David Kennedy and William B. Lucas, printed the city's first commercial lithographs, a series of church subjects drawn by W.L. Breton, probably including "Mother Bethel.", Exterior view of the rough cast second edifice of the African American church at 125 South 6th Street. Pedestrians and church attendees, predominately women, stroll the sidewalk and enter the house of worship adorned with a simple stone tablet inscribed, "Bethel Church." Known as "Mother Bethel," the church was formed from black congregants discriminated against by the Methodist Episcopal Church. The 1805 building, the site of the first convention of the Unified African Methodist Episcopal Church, stood until 1841 when a third building was erected on the site.

Title: Terrible conflagration and destruction of the steam-boat "New Jersey," [graphic] : On the River Delaware, opposite Philadelphia, on the night of Saturday, March 15th, 1856, between 8 and 9 o'clock, by which dreadful calamity sixty-one lives were lost. Names of all on board.
Description: Copyrighted by A. Pharazin., Date of publication supplied by Wainwright., Dramatic view of the steamboat engulfed in flames and smoke, the captain still at the helm as the passengers, including African Americans, escape for their lives into the icy river. Panicked passengers jump into the water already teeming with disaster victims who thrash, swim, and attempt to stay upon and assist others onto cakes of ice, debris, and a single rowboat. Rescuers from the nearby wharf, including firemen, work frantically and desperately throw a rope to a woman standing afloat a cake of ice. Contains the names of the 107 white and "colored" dead, missing, and saved passengers in three columns below the image. Captained by Ebenezer Corson, the "New Jersey," on mid-voyage to Camden from Philadelphia via an alternate elongated route due to heavy ice, caught fire as the result of defective boilers. With the fire spreading rapidly, Corson retreated to Arch Street Wharf in Philadelphia, and came within thirty feet of the pier when the pilot house collapsed leaving the boat unmanned and out of control. Corson survived by leaping ashore before the uncontrolled ship drifted back out on the river.

Description: Date of publication supplied by Wainwright., Advertisement depicting the large factory's several industrial buildings, sheds, and fenced yard near a busy street and sidewalk. Workers attend to a maze of drying lines with hanging leather pieces; delivery carts traverse the yard and depart through the gate under the sign "McNeely & Co."; and a laborer uses a horse-drawn cart to collect coal from a mound beside the main building. Pedestrians, including a woman and boy, stroll and converse on the sidewalk. In the street, an African American couple push a filled handcart and a crowded horse-drawn omnibus from the "Frankford Road - Fourth Street" line passes by. The McNeely family operated a leather manufactory in Philadelphia from 1830 until the early 20th century.
