Description: Blank membership certificate containing an allegorical scene bordered by graphic elements representing agriculture and industry. Scene depicts two women allegorical figures, with upswept hair, and in Roman garb, as well as a nude, cherubic figure attired in a cape covering his shoulders and swept over his waist in a a bucolic setting. The central female figure, stands, her right arm bent and with her right hand above her head. She holds a long staff with a flame in in her left hand. To her right is the cherubic figure who holds up a sheaf of wheat in her direction with his left hand. A bundle of wheat lies near his feet. To her left is the other allegorical female figure who is seated in a gazebo. She holds up a swath of cloth in her extended left hand. She holds the other end of it with her right hand as it drapes across her lap. A spindle sits to her left. The top of the gazebo is covered in vinery. In the background are groves of bushes, a bee hive, the peering head of a horned cow, trees, and a small building. Pictorial elements to the right symbolize industry and depict an eagle, crates, a barrel, anchor, and ships sailing on the ocean. Pictorial elements to the left symbolize agriculture and depict a sickle, parts of a plow, a cornucopia, a tree, and bushes. In 1819 the New York legislature appropriated $20,000 over two years for the promotion of agriculture and family domestic manufactures to the county agricultural societies of the state., Signed [E. Description: Membership certificate for the relief society, later the Friendly Sons of St. Patrick, organized in Philadelphia in 1771. A large central oval contains an allegorical scene showing the classical figures of Hope, Columbia, and Concordia near a column marked "Hibernian Society." The women welcome immigrants disembarking from a sailing ship on long boats. Hope leans on an anchor; bare-breasted Columbia (i.e., United States) holds a shield; and Concordia, a bag of money in her hand and an Irish harp resting behind her, reaches out to an allegorical female arrival. Description: Certificate awarded by the Sussex County Agricultural Society and depicting vignettes of scenes of farming. In the top, shows allegories of "Liberty," depicted as a white woman with a pole and cap, and "Prosperity," depicted as a white woman with a cornucopia full of fruits and vegetables. In the background is a factory and sailing ships. In the center, shows a large crowd of men and women spectators watching a sulky horserace; fair attendees walking the grounds; large tents and stands and American flags flying on flagpoles; and houses and trees in the background. Vignettes around the image include: sheep; a farmer with two large pigs; a cow and a bull; a horse; a man driving a horse-drawn reaper; and fowl, including chickens, geese, and turkeys. Title: John Weik's (Philadelphia) kochbuecher (cookbooks)
Description: Whimsical publisher's advertisement containing four vignettes in a fanciful border of food imagery surrounding a list of cookbook titles in German and English authored by Marianne Struf and the steward of the Union League, William Vollmer. Vignettes depict three quirky scenes representing agricultural work, hunting, fishing, and fine dining. Also contains a scene depicting four women peeling apples, mincing meat, and baking in a kitchen. Vignettes include an African American man waiter and an African American woman cook. Description: Scrapbook of print specimens and proofs engraved by Philadelphia and London engraver William Humphrys. Contents include postage stamp proofs, book and periodical illustrations, tile pages, portrait prints, advertisements, and cut outs of banknote and certificate vignettes. Majority of graphics depict allegorical imagery or illustrations of genre, religious, sentimental, and literary scenes, some from the plays of Shakespeare. Illustrations include scenes of courtship; female friendship; children with animals; a ghoulish-looking woman with a torch; a European man smoking a hookah; Jesus Christ; Adam & Eve; and imagery from Edmund Spencer's "Faery Queen", John Milton's "Palemon's Story," and John Gay's "Thursday: or The Spell." Allegorical works depict the figures of Columbia, Minerva, Mercury, Neptune, Bounty, Agriculture, Commerce, Justice, Hope, and Apollo, as well as scenes with the American eagle; caducei for the "Liverpool Apothecaries Company"; citizens fighting a fire; cherubs charting a globe; Native Americans; a family; sailing ships; and symbols of farming, trade, and industry. Vignettes also show a portrait of Benjamin Franklin; Pocahontas saving John Smith; and a female warrior slaying a man of royalty captioned "Sic Semper Tyranus."

Darley from Susan Fenimore Cooper's "Pages and Pictures from the Writings of James Fenimore Cooper" (New York, 1861); portrait illustrations, some from J. B. Longacre's "National Portrait Gallery" (probably 1854 edition); and vignette specimens of the American Bank Note Company and their predecessor companies. Cooper illustrations depict scenes on the frontier and ship decks, with Native Americans, and of battles; deathbeds; and of informal meeting from his works The Oak Openings, The Redskins, The Chainbearer, The Pathfinder, The Red Rover, The Monikins, Deerslayer, Homeward Bound, Lionel Lincoln, The Pilot, Last of the Mohicans, The Wept Wish-ton Wish, The Spy, and Wing and Wing.
