Description: Diploma depicting six vignettes and graphic elements symbolizing agriculture and horticulture separated into distinct scenes by borders designed as trees and foliage. At the top, a winged, female allegorical figure, attired in a robe and laurel wreath, sits with her arms outstretched over a shield surmounted by an eagle. Description: Diploma containing two vignettes and and a dominant scene symbolizing agriculture separated by borders comprised of sheaves of wheat, a shovel, farm produce, and vinery. In the upper right, vignettes depict a farmer reaping his field with a horse-drawn reaper and an industrial view of a train passing a coal breaker factory across from a coal mine in which horse-drawn coal cars arrive and depart. The dominant scene shows a farm with livestock, including a pig, turkeys, chickens, and ducks milling the grounds near a woman milking a cow while farmhands corral cows out of a yard, transport a wagon of hay from a barn, and plow a field. View also shows horses before a pasture of grazing sheep and other homesteads, the Wyoming Monument (erected in 1833 in memory of victims of the Wyoming Massacre 1778), and treescaped hills in the distance. Description: Whimsical publisher's advertisement containing four vignettes in a fanciful border of food imagery surrounding a list of cookbook titles in German and English authored by Marianne Struf and the steward of the Union League, William Vollmer. Vignettes depict three quirky scenes representing agricultural work, hunting, fishing, and fine dining. Also contains a scene depicting four women peeling apples, mincing meat, and baking in a kitchen. Vignettes include an African American man waiter and an African American woman cook. Company. Annual report, 1967, p. 55., William Humphrys (1795-1865), born in Dublin, immigrated to the United States early in his life and studied engraving under George Murray in Philadelphia. He worked as an engraver in the city circa 1815-1823 producing book illustrations, advertisements, and banknote and certificate vignettes. He also served as secretary for the Association of American Artists. Relocating to England, he produced similar work before returning to the United States in 1843. In 1845, he moved to Dublin to engrave "The Reading Magdalene" for the Royal Irish Art Union before returning to England where he worked as an engraver for the firm Perkin, Bacon, and Co. During this employ, he was noted for his re-engraving of the head of Queen Victoria for the 1 d postage stamp. Humphrys retired from engraving in his later years and worked as an accountant for the printing firm Novello & Co. He died at the Novellos' Genoa villa on January 21, 1865.
