Description: Chart showing racist depictions of fifty-four, bust-length, portraits of men and one woman of different "races" from eight geographic regions to emphasize contrived differences in cranial characteristics. The “Geographical Distribution” includes I. Arctic, II. Asiatic, III. European, IV. African, V. American, VI. Polynesian, VII. Malayan, and VIII. Australian. Vignettes are captioned with details of the products uses and surround a central view of the exterior of the busy "Simons, Coleman & Co. National Wagon Works" factory and office at No. 1109 North Front Street. Vignettes depict: African American plantation workers transporting sugar cane to a barge by a "cane cart"; laborers and settlers hauling materials out West by "road wagon" and "catamaran"; an ambush of U.S. Army soldiers, baggage wagon, and ambulance by Native Americans; and a busy Philadelphia port scene with a disinterested constable overseeing the wharf congested with carts and wagons as docked Henry Simons's factory ships ready for departure. Title: Peace Medal (From the Friendly Association for Regaining and Preserving Peace with the Indians)
Description: Presentation medal with the bust of King George II on the obverse and, on the reverse, a Quaker man holding a peace pipe at a council fire with a Native American man. Duffield, a clockmaker, engraved the die; the silversmith Richardson struck it. It was the first peace medal made in America. Description: Photographic reproduction of a caricature satirizing the unusual circumstances of the capture of the Confederate president, detained by Union cavalry troops on May 10, 1865, while wearing his wife's overcoat and shawl as a disguise. Depicts Davis being inspected by Union soldiers as he emerges from a tent, holding a basket, while attired in a hood and skirt. His wife, Varina Davis, stands next to him and an African American servant, portrayed in racist caricature with grotesque features, peers from behind the tent flap. Description: Trade card issued during the Columbian Exposition of 1893 advertising Enterprise Mf'g Co. of Pa. "Enterprise bone, Shell and Corn Mills." Contains an anachronistic scene including a caricaturized depiction of William Penn's Treaty with the Indian Also contains a view of the Electrical Building designed by Van Brunt & Howe. The exposition held in Chicago May 1-October 30, 1898 celebrated the 400th anniversary of Christopher Columbus's arrival in the New World in 1492. Description: Series of illustrated trade cards for Samuel Shoneman's "button house" and ladies' trimmings store at 101 South Eleventh Street, later 1018 Chestnut Street, in Philadelphia. Illustrations depict sprays of flowers; flowers in a vase; children carrying a potted flowering plant; a girl picking and smelling flowers; putti; a boy straddling a music stand containing sheet music and playing the violin or fiddle; a male figure attired in a hat and ruffled collar standing near a scythe and hourglass holding a hoop through which a frog leaps; and a view showing the treaty made at the village of Shackamaxon (i.e. Penn Treaty Park, Kensington) on the Delaware River. Title: Dr. George Stuart's botanical syrup and vegetable pills, the greatest family medicine in the world Laboratory no. 254, Race St. Philadelphia
Description: Advertisement containing an exterior view of the three-and-one-half story storefront on the 700 block of Race Street bordered by paragraphs of advertising text, including notice of prices that ranged from 25 cents to one dollar per box or bottle. Signage above the large central showcase window lists several diseases and ailments cured by "Dr. G. Stuart's Syrup and Vegetable Pills." Infirmities include consumption, dysentery, chills and fevers, piles, colds, coughs, bronchitis, "tumours," "erysipelas," neuralgia, and "general and nervous debility &c. &c." Shadowy views of branches, leaves, and decanters are visible in the window. Several male character types, of different ages, class, and ethnicity, holding banners inscribed with testimonials, gather around laborers loading a "Botanical [Syr]up" crate onto a horse-drawn wagon in front of the store. Title: Penn's Treaty; Boon and the Indians
Description: Book illustration reproducing architectural ornaments adorning the U.S. Capitol Rotunda. Depicts Nicholas Grevelet's 1827 sandstone relief "William Penn's Treaty with the Indians" and Enrico Causici's 1826-1827 sandstone relief "Conflict of Daniel Boone and the Indians." Shows William Penn's treaty of 1682 for Pennsylvania as a peaceful interaction with Native Americans in contrast to Daniel Boone in violent combat with Native Americans on the frontier. The treaty scene depicts Penn holding the treaty while shaking hands with a Native American holding a pipe. In the background, another Native American holds his hand up in the sign of peace in front of two doves sitting in a tree. Description: Street scene based on a watercolor study by William Birch. Depicts Speaker of the House of Representatives, Frederick Augustus Muhlenberg, on tour with a delegation of Native American men across from the second edifice of the New Zion Lutheran Church, built on Fourth Street below Cherry Street 1795-1796. The first church building, erected 1766-1769 to accommodate the overflow of the growing German congregation of St. Michael's Lutheran Church, was rebuilt in its original form following a fire in 1794. Scene also includes street and pedestrian traffic of a loaded horse-drawn dray and cart; and a laborer hauling a barrel upon his back. Description: Print commemorating the surrender in 1781 of British General Cornwallis at Yorktown depicting the watchman's purported moonlit announcement of the event on October 22nd at the Philadelphia residence of Thomas McKean, the president of Congress. Title: Dillwyn and Emlen family correspondence
Description: This collection consists of five disbound volumes of letters written to and from William Dillwyn of London and his daughter Susanna Dillwyn in America from 1770 to 1795; and thereafter until 1818, to and from Susanna and her husband Samuel Emlen, Jr. of Burlington County, New Jersey. Although Susanna lived almost her entire life apart from her father, their letters are frequent and deal primarily with family matters and kin. However, there is frequent comment concerning such topics as yellow fever; abolitionism and slavery; and American and European politics, including the Napoleonic wars and the embargo, as well as their effects upon trade and merchants in Philadelphia and London. Moreover, events such as the Federal Convention of 1787 and topics such as the health of Benjamin Franklin, the popularity of President Washington and the trials of a new republic are addressed throughout the correspondence.

Title: Pierre Eugène du Simitière collection
Description: The Library Company of Philadelphia purchased this collection of Pierre Eugene Du Simitière's manuscripts at the auction of Du Simitière's American Museum after his death on March 10, 1785. The books and pamphlets bought at the same auction have been dispersed through the Library Company's collections. Du Simitière gathered or copied these manuscripts during his travels in the West Indies, Boston, New York, and while he lived in Philadelphia, where he was a member of and one of the curators of the American Philosophical Society. After the Library Company of Philadelphia purchased the manuscripts, they were bound together. The Historical Records Survey of the Works Progress Administration described the manuscripts in "Descriptive Catalogue of the Du Simitière Papers in the Library Company of Philadelphia" (1940), from which many of the following series and records descriptions have been abstracted. Since the Historical Records survey, many of the bound volumes have been unbound and foldered by the Library Company of Philadelphia. The unbound volumes in the series descriptions contain folder level description; however, the bound volumes are described only as an overall work. For more detail on the bound volumes, see the "Descriptive Catalogue of the Du Simitière Papers in the Library Company of Philadelphia" (1940). Researchers should be aware that the series titles are drawn from the title of the bound volume. It is important to read the entire scope note for each series, because the volumes often contained additional topics than are listed in the title.

Title: Views of Philadelphia
Description: Collection of prints from the various editions and restrikes of Birch's "Views of Philadelphia," originally published in 1800 as The City of Philadelphia, in the State of Pennsylvania North America; as it appeared in the year 1800. Four editions of the views, purchased through subscription and totaling 44 unique plates including a map of the city and title page with vignette, were published by William Birch in Philadelphia from 1800 until 1828. First and largest edition contained 29 plates, the pictorial views drawn by Thomas Birch and engraved by Samuel Seymour between 1798 and 1800; with the map and title page executed by script engraver William Barker. Bookseller Robert Campbell is listed as a seller on many of these plates, but appears to have been disassociated with the project before publication of the bound volume. Second edition of 22 plates was published in 1804. Third edition of 14 plates was published in 1809. Fourth edition of 12 plates was published between 1827 and 1828. The first and second edition were printed by Philadelphia printer, Richard Folwell. The later editions, predominately completed by William Birch alone, contained reissues of selected plates from the first edition as well as new engravings of prominent city structures erected after 1800. In the 1840s restrikes of five plates were produced by bookseller Robert Desilver, and in the 1860s, twelve by the antiquarian John McAllister, Jr; many of the restrikes originally published in the fourth edition. Collection also contains the second edition copper plate of the Bank of Pennsylvania, and the fourth edition copper plate of The Late Theatre in Chestnut Street., Series of late 18th and early 19th-century views of principal sections of the city of Philadelphia including primary streets, government buildings, local landmarks, and financial, religious, educational, and benevolent institutions. The series, the first of its kind in the United States, was created to attract new citizens and to illustrate to an international audience the vitality of the nation's premiere city. Description: Series of caricatures predominately satirizing the effects of the presidential policies of Abraham Lincoln on his re-election and the candidacy of Democratic nominee and former Commander of the U.S. Army, George McClellan, in the presidential election of 1864. Lincoln caricatures depict racist scenes and themes of election loss and show the president as a comic stage performer; a feeding open-mouthed tool of the abolitionists; as a defeated Robin Hood with his "Band of Brothers," (i.e. cabinet members Edwin Stanton, William Seward, and Gideon Welles); as weighed down by the "Old Keystone", a visual metaphor for the large number of Pennsylvania soldiers lost in the war; as a buffoon tripped up by his large boots of "military necessity"; as patronizing a miniature McClellan propped up on the "Chicago Platform"; as McClellan's puppeteer; and as "loved little and long" for his emancipation of the enslaved. Oval frames surround the texts, which encircle bust-length portraits of George Washington and Abraham Lincoln. The frames are adorned with banners labeled with the names of the original 13 colonies and the 38 states recognized as of 1876. Two bird's eye views showing the development of a cityscape, possibly New York City, from 1776 to 1876 are visible between the framed texts. Description: Collection of fifteen cartes de visite of sentimental, satiric, and racist Civil War era scenes, predominately depicting white men soldiers, by Philadelphia artist Henry Collins Bispham. Includes scenes of soldiers flushing out a sharpshooter, engaged in battle, wielding a knife, being thwarted from stealing a chicken and honey, dozing on watch, and confronted on horseback by a growling dog, as well as contrasting views of a Union and Confederate amputee soldier returning home. Racist caricatures show an ape walking with a cane, Lincoln spoon feeding a white man soldier the "Black Draft," and a downtrodden Southern white woman on the defense with an enslaved African American man on crutches and an African American boy. Company. Annual report, 1967, p. 55., William Humphrys (1795-1865), born in Dublin, immigrated to the United States early in his life and studied engraving under George Murray in Philadelphia. He worked as an engraver in the city circa 1815-1823 producing book illustrations, advertisements, and banknote and certificate vignettes. He also served as secretary for the Association of American Artists. Relocating to England, he produced similar work before returning to the United States in 1843. In 1845, he moved to Dublin to engrave "The Reading Magdalene" for the Royal Irish Art Union before returning to England where he worked as an engraver for the firm Perkin, Bacon, and Co. During this employ, he was noted for his re-engraving of the head of Queen Victoria for the 1 d postage stamp. Humphrys retired from engraving in his later years and worked as an accountant for the printing firm Novello & Co. He died at the Novellos' Genoa villa on January 21, 1865.

Title: To the people of America, this engraving of "First in Peace," from the original painting, is respectfully dedicated, representing the arrival of General George Washington at the Battery, New York, April 23rd, 1789, previous to his inauguration as the first president of the United States of America, April 30, 1789
Description: Print after the design of painter Henry Brueckner of Washington's arrival by barge to New York (the nation's capital) for his inauguration depicting a large crowd welcoming the newly-elected president. Shows Washington, at the head of the barge, raising his hat to New York Governor George Clinton standing within a heavily decorated "Welcome" canopy on the wharf. Clinton stands next to his wife, daughters, and white men envoys, all finely attired. On the heavily-decorated barge, containing a red canopy, Washington is surrounded by white men envoys and oarsmen. The envoys are finely attired and the oarsmen wear matching tan suits and black caps adorned with ribbons. The ribbons contain the names of the U.S. states. Throngs of men, women, and child spectators stand along the wharf and upon sailing vessels on the river. Spectators include an African American man cheering with his hat in the air (right); white women in gowns; a white sailor hanging from a rope ladder attached to a ship (right); and an Indigenous man, woman, and baby seated in a canoe by the barge (center right).
